My wife, not a sports fan at all, asked me the following question when we heard that the Crusty Ol Bastard was still kickin:
"Honey, it seems really strange that all of a sudden Joe Pa is having all these physical issues...do you think he's trying to off himself?"
Me:

I met a Penn State fan at a party Saturday night. They have a twisted way of rationalizing all this. Not the Sandusky part. They get that.
But with everyone else involved in covering up/pushing this to the side? They just don't see that anyone did anything wrong.

Me:
If I was amateur psychoanalyzing, I'd guess his mishaps are motivated by grief. He's lost most (except $$ and family) of what mattered to him, and it's anyone's guess where those fell in order of priority.
Kind of the same way that elderly spouses often die within a very short time of each other. They lose the will to hang on here, and find a way out, perhaps unconscious that they are doing it.
Given how much Joe got of what he wanted out of this world for most of his life, I can't feel very sorry for him no matter how much he beats himself up. Pretty sure the anguish Jerry's victims live with is still considerably greater--and contaminating a far larger percentage of their lives--than any pain enabler JoePa will manage to inflict on himself.
