Penn State Coach Joe Paterno (official thread)
Joe Paterno began talking about retirement in recent weeks. What are the chances that he will if he goes head-to-head with Bowden and wins?
That would give him a Big Ten co-championship, BCS bowl title and recent career highlight. The downside next year is a game at the 'Shoe and away games at Notre Dame and Wisconsin.
I think the chances are high that he will retire, given this scenario.

If it's true he wants to leave on a high note, this year is the year. Even with a loss to FSU, really.

The talking heads always mention that the freshmen are what opened up the offense and keyed the success this year.
But there are a lot of seniors on that team, including the QB, and JoePa will have a tough time having a similar record next year. It would be a good time for him to leave.
On the other hand, Bowden will stay at least as long as JoePa does, so he doesn't lose that career wins record. And it's been fun to watch FSU struggle the last few years. With the fine exception of last night's victory, of course.

I think it would depend on how much he wants the career wins record back. If he wants it back, he may need to wait for Bowden to retire.
But I think Bowden may be waiting for JoePa to retire, also, so that he can keep the record for himself.
I'd be surprised, though, if that's a factor in his decision. But it seems to me that he's so used to the whole football atmosphere that even if he retires from Penn State, he'll still be in football, somehow. Maybe he'll coach high school or be an "advisor" for a team, somewhere.

I think he comes back next year but if he doesn't get atleast 9 wins I think he'll retire.

Penn State loses everyone and their sister this year. They will be decimated by graduation, he can either leave on a high note, or stay around for a couple more shitty years...

For the life of me I just can't see Joe Pa not using a win over Bowden head to head to cap one last great season and call it a day.
The guy deserves to go out a winner and he's got to know he's going out sometime soon anyway, might as well be on the right note.

If for some reason you ever get totally fed up with the BCS, or what you feel are injustices, or just think that Big Time CFB is just way too corporate and all about the cash- I recommend that you get a tape of the interview with Joe Paterno during the BCS pairings show tonite.
Coach Peterno not only represents all of what is "good" about College Athletics, he represents what is "good" about people. Here is a guy in the major spotlight of National TV, and he's talking about his wife and Bowdens wife, and not wanting them to go shopping together because she spends too much money. He's totally trying to take the focus off of himself and Bobby Bowden, and just wants to promote the Orange Bowl as his "Team's Game."
Very nice job he did in promoting Robinson as a serious Heisman Candidate.
The guy just has a way of making me smile, and be happy to be a CFB fan when ever I hear him speak.
I'll tell you what, I'm a sick Buckeye fan to the core. I never played football in High School, it just wasn't my sport. But if it was, I would have dreamed about playing for Coach Hayes. Then we bring in such great people as Earle Bruce and Jim Tressel to continue the tradition. However, and I've thought about this since Coach Hayes left, if Joe Paterno ever entered my home and offered me a scholarship to come play for him, I would find it damn near impossible to turn him down. Best of luck to PSU. Go Kick some "nole-ass."

Who Dies First ???
I work with several Free Shoes U fans and they generaly are ready for old Bob to retire . They gripe about him a LOT ! Another season like this one and the clamor wil be DEAFENING . Plus , he is really visibly aging . I don't think Joe Pa looks much different over the last eight or so years . I beleive this can be attributed to FOSSILIZATION !

Although this year is the perfect opportunity for him to go out as a big winner, I think he sticks around for two more years.
