Decanonized Mythologized Disgraced Ped State Monster Coach Joe Paterno (Zombie Icon)

First question to JoePa.

Q - "Hi Coach, I'm Marilyn Garcia from USAToday. ... I've followed your career for a long time, and I'm thinking you're going to be Penn State's coach until the day you die - what do you think about that?"

JoePa - "Is that wishful thinkin', or what?" ... "As long as I enjoy it, I'll continue to coach. ... Right now, I have no plans whatsoever as far as whether I'm gonna go another year, 2 years, 5 years, or what have you."

Q - "You had intestinal issues this last spring?"

JoePa - "It was a little bit below the intestines."

Q - "Coach, do you expect to change your preparation for fall camp, given your health over the summer?"

JoePa - "No, I'll stick with Preparation H" (OK, I made that up)

Actual JoePa -"What did Mark Twain said? ... 'The rumor of my death has been over-exaggerated' ... or something, I forget, I used to know a little but more about those ... I really didn't lose any time, as I said, the problem I had was not having control of some things, I had to be careful that I didn't get myself in a position where I would embarrass myself. But as far as lookin' at tapes, and talkin' to kids, and knowin' what to ... you know, gettin' ready for different things; there was really no difference, except I couldn't make as many public appearances as I've had, because of the fact that, you know, I could be standin' up here and all of the sudden have to leave. And nobody obviously would want to be in that kind of position. So I don't see it being any different. I hope I'm ready to go, I think I am, I've done my homework."

My Translation of the above into a very brief answer - "Depends."

He's referring to his bowels, yes?

I gotta say next to JT JoePa is my favorite coach today. It's like watching my grandfather coach and answer questions. I'm serious my grandfather is 81 Sicilian and has won a JoePa look alike contest. I mean how can you not appreciate the shit he says to the media. It's awesome.

'Pa looked a little frail to me at the podium today. Wonder if he's downplaying the seriousness.

I thought that a little bit when I saw him on TV yesterday.

But seeing him in person today (I was just a few feet behind him for a few minutes during a BTN interview, and afterwards he walked right by me), frail is the word that came to mind.

He looks fairly good when you just see him from the shoulders up. But he has clearly lost weight in his arms and legs, and I suspect that he may have other health issues besides the 'lower than the intestines' problem he mentioned yesterday. He is able to maintain a decent pace while walking, however.

I was thinking he'd try to coach through 2011, in order to move from his current 394 wins to beyond Eddie Robinson's 408. But the way he looked today, I'll be surprised if he's still the head coach in 2011.

Standing a few feet behind him may not be the safest place to be.

I would be surprised he is still alive in 2011. I understand he is coach in name only and his main job is cheerleader/motivator, but I don't think he can do that anymore. It was sad watching him last year, this year is going to be down right painful.

the man is 80 something. anyone who has watched someone age, be it close friend, father, grandfather, etc will be able to push you in that general direction of what happens typically sometime between the early to late 70s. its just a fact of life. to me it is amazing, you have a guy who is 83, who will turn EIGHT FOUR during this season, simply amazing. if i have half the quality of life of joe pa at that age, ill be happy as hell.

i started a thread in the mill a few weeks ago about his health. lots of talk was abound about him not being seen around town at all for five or six weeks, something surprising for a guy who is known to walk to practice, or wander around state college.

the honest frank truth is that coaching at the d 1 level requires an intensity that few here, if any?, of us live at. put him in college football powerhouse and its a job that few could handle. for someone to manage it at his age is astonishing. when the day comes that he leaves the profession it wont be a better place. aside from the occasional negative recruiting, and some off the field dust ups, he runs a good clean program. hes a pillar of college football, and someday everyone who saw him coach a game will tell their grandkids. in much the same way my old man talked about his trip out to see a bud wilkins game, i see my venture(s) out to state college to see a legend coach his team...

I'm guessing that BN27 wrote his congressman suggesting this.

Paterno nominated for Medal of Freedom

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has been nominated for the highest civilian award in the country.

Congressmen including Glenn Thompson, Mark Critz and Tim Holden say the Hall of Fame coach deserves a Presidential Medal of Freedom for his service to the Nittany Lions, the university and the State College community.

Their nomination letter to President Barack Obama says Paterno personifies sportsmanship on the field and academic achievement in the classroom while also noting Paterno's philanthropic efforts.

Cont'd ...
