Decanonized Mythologized Disgraced Ped State Monster Coach Joe Paterno (Zombie Icon)

Do I think that this could ever happen at Ohio State? A thousand times, no! That is why we should not make the mistake of thinking that it never could.

Excellent Post. Repped ya.

Problem is that we put people on an undeserved pedestal, when most people don't know the person PERSONALLY.

I'm sure some of those here know Coach Tress personally, and to me, they're better judges of the man's character than probably 95% of the people that post here. Same thing goes for here in Lincoln and Doc Tom. The guy ran for freaking congress and WON, for cryin out loud. The guy's got the keys to the state.

But what happens is that we dehumanize these people, which is unfair to them. Unless you truly know a person, you don't truly know that person's character. Point in case:

My mouth hit the floor when Coach Tress and tOSU got busted. Never saw it comin.

Did I act surprised when USC and Carroll got whacked, or when FSU and Bowden went through what they went through? Not at all, I shrugged it off.
Unfair to them? Probably (except in Carroll's case ).

We need to remember - these guys don't deserve to be on pedestals (and most don't want to be). As soon as you put them there, be prepared for the tumble.

In the PSU case - a guy was on his pedestal so long, he got used to being up there. That's why he never retired, never stepped aside, and in the end, this had to happen for him to leave. The fans got used to him being up there. Hell, his FAMILY got used to him being up there. That's why, their response to this incident isn't surprising to me at all.

That's why when Doc Tom announced he was retiring from coaching, we were all like, WTF?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......

But hindsight being what it is (I heard that from someone), It's good he got out when he did. Maybe he was trying to prevent himself becoming like this....

I just picture that scene with Michael Douglas in the movie "Falling Down" when he takes out the bazooka when he gets mad at the construction worker (i.e. What's wrong with the street?).

The extra workers were to probably create an extra buffer zone in case any of the Paterno supporters got unruly.

The extra workers were Navy Seals.

LOL - I can see a photoshop contest happening here:

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The famed statue of Joe Paterno was taken down from outside the Penn State football stadium Sunday as the NCAA announced it would be issuing sanctions against the university whose top officials were accused in a scathing report of burying child sex abuse allegations against a now-convicted retired assistant.

Workers lifted the 7-foot-tall statue off its base and used a forklift to move it into Beaver Stadium as the 100 to 150 students watched, some chanting, "'We are Penn State.'"
