DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

lol. You'd all make great politicians. Using stats that fit your BS and dismissing stats that don't. You're not even worth having a discussion with any more.

By the way, the name's a joke. The fact that someone thought it was real and someone else thought I actually like her makes it even funnier. But I wouldn't expect anything less from you guys.

And the LOLs are real, not decoration. I really am laughing out loud at you people. Keep posting your "logic" and I'll keep laughing.

And yet you took the necessary time to type in all that nonsense. If the denizens of this board aren't worth your effort then I can only assume you won't be gracing us with your presence anymore ....

The video was a joke. Lighten up, Francis.

 It's not worth it for YOU to discuss this with us anymore. Of course.

You dismissed stats that didn't fit your argument. You used a sample size of two games while we used a sample size of an entire season. You used stats that don't exist. We used stats that exist. We watched the football games and saw that the Jets had a good defense. We saw Gholston play and be a complete non-factor.

But we're the ones not using logic.

Probably best that you don't discuss this with us anymore, but not because of us.

Does anyone else think that Bobby Carpenter has looked good in the limited opportunities he was finally given this season? But how is that relevant to Vern's thread you might ask.

Jamarcus Russell will be a great NFL QB once the coaches stop holding him back.

NY Jets coach Rex Ryan says Vernon Gholston facing do-or-die season

Jets LB Vernon Gholston has done more sitting than hitting in his first two seasons.

Jets coach Rex Ryan threw down the gauntlet regarding lackluster linebacker Vernon Gholston, saying it?s time for him to start hitting the quarterback or hit the road.

??I think that is an accurate statement,?? said Ryan Saturday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis when asked if 2010 is a make-or-break season for Gholston.

??Generally by the third year, you got to see a guy really making strides and I expect Vernon to really make strides this year.??

Gholston, who was selected sixth overall in 2008 and landed a contract that guaranteed him $21 million, has yet to notch a sack in 29 career games. Last season, he had 14 tackles ? and no impact plays ? in 14 games, including three starts. He had just six special teams tackles.

Some teammates have questioned Gholston?s desire and love for the game. Another said the 6-3, 264 pounder needs to lose some weight and gain some flexibility.

??That?s still a work in progress but I will say this,?? said Ryan of Gholston. ??When we are going back and looking at our cut-ups and things like that, I think this young man deserves a better chance than we are giving him. We need to give him more playing time.

Jets won't give up on Gholston
February 27, 2010
By BART HUBBUCH

INDIANAPOLIS -- Forget any speculation about the Jets using an uncapped year to rid themselves of the utter disaster that is Vernon Gholston.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said here today that he is prepared to give the underachieving defensive end another season to live up to his first-round draft billing.

Or, at the very least, record his first NFL sack.

"We need to give him more playing time," Ryan said during a break in the scouting combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. "I've had players that take a little time, but you know that he?s got it in him -- so we will see what happens."

Ryan, though, did admit that 2010 is going to be a make-or-break season for Gholston, the No. 6 overall pick two years ago who has just 24 tackles in 24 NFL games.

"I think [make or break] is an accurate statement," Ryan said. "Generally by the third year, you got to see a guy really making strides, and I expect Vernon to really make strides this year."

As for struggling outside linebacker Vernon Gholston, Tannenbaum affirmed that he foresees Gholston having a future with the team beyond this season.

?Yes I do," Tannenbaum said. "I am excited about this offseason for Vernon. It?s really important to him.

"We have had a lot of talks with him over the last few weeks about how important this year is for him and where this offseason is. It took him a couple years of Ohio State to get to where he was. I believe in Vernon and I believe in our defensive coaching staff."

Vernon's example looms over Jets' pick
Jets Blog
By MARK CANNIZZARO
April 19, 2010

For every Lawrence Taylor in the NFL Draft, there is a Vernon Gholston.

The Jets are well-versed on what can go wrong in the NFL Draft, how one bust pick high in the first round can set back a franchise.

Perhaps no high draft pick in NFL history hurt a franchise more dramatically than Blair Thomas did the Jets. The team's selection of the decorated Penn State running back as the second overall pick in the 1990 draft left the organization reeling for years afterward.

But the selection of Gholston as the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft is the recent standard.

SIXTH SENSE: The struggles of LB Vernon Gholston, whom the Jets selected No. 6 overall in 2008, serve as a reminder of the draft's perils.

Gholston's failure to become a competent starter as a pass-rushing outside linebacker has forced the team to go out and spend big money on free agents such as Calvin Pace to compensate for what Gholston has not done.

Gholston, the former Ohio State star linebacker, enters his third pro season with dubious career numbers. In 29 games played, he has only 16 tackles and zero sacks.

His four starts in those 29 games came only because he was forced to replace Pace for the first four games of last season while Pace served a suspension for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances.

This is not what Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum was seeking from a No. 6 pick to whom he gave some $21 million in guaranteed money.

Gholston seems to work hard and has been praised by coach Rex Ryan, yet he continues to appear an outsider in the Jets' locker room -- perhaps feeling like an outcast because of his lack of production on the field.

position change?

I wonder if anyone has thought about trading for Gholston, adding 25 pounds or more and playing him strictly at DE, or even DT? Wouldn't he make a great 320 pound nose tackle??

He'll never be an NFL linebacker.... at least, he'll never get a chance to be a NFL linebacker.

How you going to get him to 320 lbs?? His frame was maxed out at tOSU and he was only at 260 lbs. The guy is a Tampa 2 type DE. He needs to play his contract out, be the butt of all jokes about being a bust, and work hard in his next opportunity to shag the label. I'm still hopeful he can be an impact player once he finds the right fit...which isn't as an OLB.

Sources: Gholston working on D-line
By Rich Cimini
Special to ESPNNewYork.com

The Jets' acquisition of Jason Taylor Tuesday is a tacit admission the organization has lost hope for Vernon Gholston. In fact, Gholston's days as a rush linebacker appear over.

After mulling the move for weeks, the Jets are leaning heavily toward making Gholston a full-time defensive end, league sources told ESPNNewYork.com. The former first-round pick has been working out with the defensive linemen for weeks, sources said, and now the Taylor signing all but clinches it. The team will wait to see how things shake out in the draft before making it permanent.

Jets convert Gholston to defensive
Associated Press

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets are converting former first-round draft pick Vernon Gholston into a defensive end after two disappointing years at outside linebacker.

Gholston was the sixth overall pick in 2008 but failed to become the impact player the Jets envisioned as a hybrid linebacker-defensive end. The Jets plan to have Gholston back up veteran Shaun Ellis and get more athletic at the position.

"That's going to be something that we look forward to," coach Rex Ryan said after the draft Saturday. "So, that's why I never felt that it was a need to jump up and take a defensive end [in the draft] when our plan all along was to put Vernon in a position where he can be successful. I think we did that."
