Took him a while to get going at Ohio St. too. The light will eventually come on for him.

Vernon Gholston Sighting
Posted on November 24th, 2008 by Bassett
Although I was watching the game Sunday with family and friends and trying to actually be social rather than dissect each play ? just a quick question did anyone else see Vernon Gholston manhandling two blockers towards the end of the game? Cause I did ?
For all you doubters, we?ve not seen what this kid is capable of. Give him time ? we all knew that Keller would be the immediate contributor of the two.
Jets D will eventually use him as a stand-up D-end.3074326;1338569; said:He manhandled blockers? Maybe they should put him on the line where he does best.

To tell you the truth, even if he was playing his ass off right now, I'm not sure how much play he'd be getting with how awesome the Jets D has been.

No Epiphany Yet, but Gholston Shows Progress
By Gregory Bishop
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? While the Jets players spent Tuesday nursing their bumps and bruises, Coach Eric Mangini spent the day at the team offices, where he bumped into JoJo Wooden.
Wooden, the Jets assistant director of player personnel, talked with Mangini about his own playing career at Syracuse. Wooden told Mangini that he remembered the exact moment during his red shirt freshman season when everything just clicked.
The coach used the story as a way to illustrate the progress of first-round draft pick Vernon Gholston, the rookie linebacker the Jets selected sixth overall last spring.
?Everybody has that moment where the clouds kind of drift away, the sun comes out, and you can just start playing,? Mangini said.
The coach didn?t say that Gholston has experienced that sort of epiphany on the pros. Gholston has compiled 11 tackles this season, far fewer than the number fans expected back in April. But Mangini sees positive signs where others may not. ?He?s made a lot of progress,? Mangini said. ?He?s played most consistently on special teams, and he?s improved the most in that area. Defensively, it?s still a work in progress.?
Mangini said Gholston?s performance on defense last week against Tennessee was his best this season.
?He didn?t get an overwhelming amount of opportunities, but the opportunities he did get, I thought he did a good job with,? Mangini said.
Gholston missed most of the Jets mini-camps this off-season while finishing the semester, per N.C.A.A. rules, at Ohio State. He also switched positions, moving from a college defensive end to outside linebacker in the Jets? 3-4 defensive scheme.
Mangini saod that he set no expectations for Gholston?s progress. He listed other linebackers who took time to develop, among them Willie McGinest, Roosevelt Colvin and Tedy Bruschi, three players who spent time with Mangini?s former team, the New England Patriots.
The biggest difference for Gholston, Mangini said, is that the Jets game plan for each opponent individually. Other teams run the same plays, make the same calls, but the Jets change those from week-to-week.
How patient can the Jets be with Vernon Gholston?
by Frank Della Femina/NJ.com Tuesday December 02, 2008, 10:38 AM
William Perlman/The Star-LedgerVernon Gholston has been making progress since training camp but some would say he's not progressing fast enough.
Earlier in the season the New York Jets were willing to chalk up Vernon Gholston's progress in the NFL as a learning experience. This past Sunday when the Jets called on him to make some key defensive plays, the rookie linebacker failed to come through. How patient can the Jets really be?
Apparently Eric Mangini's patience is running thin. The Star-Ledger's Dave Hutchinson:
"He had a significant shot (Sunday)," responded a testy Mangini. "There were plays to be made. His opportunities were based on his ability to make those plays."Continued..............
Gholston's season has to be labeled a disappointment at this point. The No. 6 pick in April's draft, he has 12 tackles, with most of those coming on special teams, and no sacks.
His playing time has increased over the last two weeks, and he nearly had Cutler near the end of the third quarter. He chased the quarterback on a rollout, but Cutler got the ball away to tight end Tony Scheffler for a 24-yard gain.
"In moments [impatience] has set in," Gholston said. "You look at the sack total and for yourself you wish you had some. But like the other day there's a lot where I've been close. The thing about sacks is once you get that first one, they keep on rolling after that. I try not to worry about it too much."

So where do we go from here? Same place we?ve been heading since the spring. With quality personnel ahead of him, I still think that there?s no reason to rush him.
He?s getting payed a lot of money? Big deal, that?s what the cap is about. Frustrated that they could have taken someone to impact the game this year? The Jets have used their high draft picks for need in the first two years of their reign, and this was the first real BPA pick they made in the first round. They were entitled to it with the work they did in free agency.
I am going to give the kid at least two or three full seasons before I pass final judgement. D?Brickashaw was panned for two years, and I spent that time pleading to stay judgement. Now with some other players around him, look at him now. His sack total has declined precipitously and his run blocking has roundly improved. People routinely complained that they wanted to see shutdown play and a mean streak from him, and now I see both in 2008.
I know it?s infuriating to live with the mistakes, reversals of fortune, and what-could-have-been plays, but give the kid more time, even if you do need to hurl epiphets into the sky come gameday. It?s going to click for him eventually.
