DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

Has anyone else seen on ESPN where Todd McShay has called Vernon Gholston un althetic?

He tied the bench press record at 37 reps for god's sake, had a 40 yard dash of 4.67, and a vertical jump of 35" at 6' 4" and 264 lbs that is far from unathletic. I wish Todd would say that to his face just so he could get a look at the size of his arms.

Vernon Gholston, New York Jets

Turning Leaf: The classic NFL numbers player: height, weight, 40-time,
bench press, etc. Yep, and 10 years ago Manning was too skinny and his
arm strength was questioned, and Leaf was the total package. NFL GMs
have a saying for computer guys who look the part but rarely play it:
Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

Hello, West Texas A&M: Remember the name Lawrence Wilson. He was
the best defensive end at Ohio State last fall until he broke his leg in
Week 1. Here's all you need to know about Gholston: his highlight over the
last two years was beating Jake Long for sacks. In two national title games
against the college football elite, Gholston disappeared.

What is it with this guy? Big Vern is a stud. I dropped his e-mail address for appropriate responses:biggrin:

(I know, I posted two links tonight with less than laudatory subject matter, but no, this is not my troll side coming out. :tongue2: I did not realize how much negative shit you guys sit through on a day to day basis from the national media until I started posting here. Man, win that USC game..)

Training Camp Battles: Rookies, vets expected to go head-to-head

Now that we know who's playing where in the wake of the NFL's draft, it's time to start focusing on who's playing where, as in the positional battles to watch for once training camps open. Here are 12 depth chart competitions that we'll be keeping an eye on this summer:
1. N.Y. Jets outside linebacker, Vernon Gholston vs. Bryan Thomas -- After his nine-sack season in 2006 earned him a fat new contract, Thomas, a former first-round pick himself in 2002, regressed last year, totaling just 2? sacks with almost zero big-play impact from his weakside position. Enter Gholston, the No. 6 overall pick, who will be starting at some point opposite newly signed strong-side linebacker Calvin Pace, one of New York's big offseason additions. The Jets may work Gholston in as a situational pass rusher at first to get him acclimated to playing linebacker in their 3-4 defense (he was a defensive end at Ohio State), but New York needs him to develop into a three-down performer by 2009 at the latest.

Why do people think that Vern took plays off. JT has refuted this by simply stating the mission of the DE's was to contain, and stay home. I personally dont care what they say, but theyre giving this kid a bad rap, and he has been nothing but respectful and classy, while playing his butt off. Just remember that he loves us, and is the personification of QB's nightmares!!

The piling on is unreal... I dont understand. he is the fuggin single season sack record holder at The Ohio State. What did they want him to do double it to be considered productive? The media is taking this to an unprecidented level and Todd Mcshit applies bronzer to his face... what a d-bag. I have seen players that take plays off and he is not one of them IMO. We as Ohio State fans are usually the first to point these things out. It seems like it came out of left field and snow balled into a Chris Long filating contest.

Sent out a few emails and got this response:

Not real sure what he is talking about Vern was always quiet and polite to everyone, Heacock loved him. people like to spout off about shit they have no clue about, and I would have to say this guys is doing that...he turns people saying Vern disappears in games into he is a coach killer (watch the film he didnt disappear he was held ALOT this past year)...for instance, all you ever heard about when the media did stories on XXXX was how great of a teammate he was and great locker room presence, that cant be farther from the truth...

Mick McCabe: Newly drafted Vernon Gholston forever indebted to coach at Cass Tech
May 2, 2008

It is time to separate fact from fiction.

Leading up to last weekend's NFL draft, Vernon Gholston entertained writers by telling them that when he was a sophomore at Detroit Cass Tech, coach Thomas Wilcher mistook him for someone's parent the first time they met.

That isn't entirely accurate.

"I thought he was an uncle of somebody," Wilcher recalled. "I knew he wasn't a student -- I knew that. He was so big, so huge, so grown-looking."

But Gholston wasn't a sophomore. He was a freshman.

"I thought he was 23 or 24," Wilcher said. "He told me he was a freshman. I thought he was kidding. I told him to be for real."
