Vernon Gholston hopes 56 is lucky number this time for Jets
BY RICH CIMINI

Shortly after last season, Eric Mangini was on a treadmill in the Jets' weight room, performing a cardio workout, when he caught his first glimpse of Vernon Gholston on tape - and that really got the coach's heart pumping. "I remember thinking, 'This could be the sixth pick in the draft,'" Mangini said Friday. "He kept popping off the screen."

The coach was so captivated that he rushed to his office, punched up Gholston on the computer and checked out the Jets' scouting reports on the former Ohio State star. He was impressive on the computer, too. It was love at first byte.

Jets' Gholston gets a load of 3-4 in minicamp

The only part missing from the Vernon Gholston portion of Eric Mangini's news conference late Friday afternoon was something along the lines of "And boy are my arms tired."

He sounded excited, especially when discussing Gholston, whom the Jets are depending on to help what last season was one of the league's worst pass rushes. When Mangini, perched on his treadmill, first saw Gholston on tape, he saw abilities that had him thinking, "This could be the sixth pick in the draft."

"The strength on the edge, his ability to rush the passer, the number of sacks and the amount of times he was able to affect the quarterback," Mangini said. "Whether it be driving the tackle back into him or getting a hand on him, altering the throw. Things like that kept popping off the screen."

But all of those things were accomplished with Gholston playing mostly at defensive end in Ohio State's 4-3 defense. The Jets play a 3-4 in which Gholston projects as a linebacker.

Gholston called the learning process "a constant grind," but he was happy to have all the weeks of predraft hype, interviews and speculation behind him.

"It's good to finally go out there, learn the system, be out there making mistakes," Gholston said. "In college, I didn't make too many mistakes, and now you're making mistakes. But you do learn and grow and over time get better."

Gholston practices with Jets for first time
By Dennis Waszak Jr., AP Sports Writer

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. ? Vernon Gholston insists it's only a coincidence that he's wearing the No. 56 for the New York Jets.

Sure, the hulking outside linebacker is expected to add a much-needed boost to the Jets' pass rush, but he doesn't consider himself a sack-collecting savior. Still, his lofty draft status, eye-popping skills and, now, his jersey number have some hoping for a second coming of Lawrence Taylor, the Hall of Famer who terrorized quarterbacks for years with the New York Giants.

"I just thought it was a good number," Gholston said with a grin Friday on the first day of Jets rookie camp. "That's all I really thought."

Gholston, the sixth overall pick in the draft, wore No. 50 at Ohio State and would've taken that if veteran Eric Barton didn't already have it. So, it wasn't a nod to Lawrence Taylor, one of the most disruptive defensive forces in NFL history?

"No, not really," said Gholston, still smiling. "I had limited options. Obviously, my No. 50 was taken, so of the numbers I had to choose from, that's the one I picked."

The piling on is unreal... I dont understand. he is the fuggin single season sack record holder at The Ohio State. What did they want him to do double it to be considered productive? The media is taking this to an unprecidented level and Todd Mcshit applies bronzer to his face... what a d-bag. I have seen players that take plays off and he is not one of them IMO. We as Ohio State fans are usually the first to point these things out. It seems like it came out of left field and snow balled into a Chris Long filating contest.

I agree 100%, Michael Smith on ESPN was the only on draft day would said it, he said "Look at OSU's system and look at the other DEs, they are coached to contain, not pursue".

I am real tired of the "he take splays off" theme. I am a Raider fan and if we had passed on Dmac for Gholston I would have been fine with it, we ranked 27th in sacking the QB last year. With Asomugha and Hall at the CB and Burgess on the other side, Gholston could have been a monster in our defense. But a lot of Raider fans bought into this crap. This guy has been the patriarch of his family from age 13 when he lost his dad, he worked his butt off to maximize god given talent, those kind of people just don't dog it.

I think Big Vern has a real shot a DROY, with all the $$$ NYJ spent this year the pressure will be spread around and he won't be expected to "save the defense", he will be able to just come in and play.

Someone tell Mangini to get a clue. Vernon is a bust who lacks any character. Just ask Tom Marino. He knows what he's talking about.

Jets? Gholston prepares for shift

Published:Sunday, May 18, 2008

By Pete Mollica

The former Ohio State lineman is learning to play linebacker.

NILES ? Ohio State?s defensive end Vernon Gholston smiled when asked if he gave up his senior season with the Buckeyes to join the NFL because he didn?t want to face Youngstown State again.

?You got me, that was the reason,? laughed Gholston, whose former team will play YSU in the opener for the second straight year. ?Hey, those guys gave us a pretty good game last year. I know I was surprised.?

The real reason, of course, is that Gholston was projected as a high first round draft pick, eventually getting taken No. 6 overall by the New York Jets.

Gholston (6-4, 264), who has been projected as an outside linebacker in the pros, has just returned from the Jets rookie mini-camp and he was impressed.

?It was a fun time being with all the other rookies who were making their first start in the pros,? he said. ?It was a chance to get a feel for the new system and if went off very well.

?Football is still football, but now you know that it is moving on to a whole different level no matter whether it?s the New York Jets or any other NFL team,? Gholston said. ?You just have to go out there and do your stuff, work hard and try and adjust to the new system.?

MANGINI NOT WORRIED ABOUT GHOLSTON
TOP PICK WON'T ARRIVE FOR ANOTHER WEEK
Post Staff Report
May 28, 2008 --

gholston2.jpg

Eric Mangini said today he?s keeping Vernon Gholston up to date even though the first-round pick can?t join the Jets until the end of next week.

Gholston, the sixth overall pick in April?s NFL Draft, has to wait because league rules state rookies aren't allowed to participate until their class graduates, or complete their finals and have permission from the school.

"With Vernon Gholston, the first day he's going to be allowed in here is June 6," Mangini said of the Ohio State defensive end. "That's when he'll be back. I keep in touch with him, keep him current. But that's the first time he'll actually be able to participate in anything with the team and actually physically be in the building."

The Jets have been involved in organized team activities (OTAs) since mid-May.

"You'd love to have him here, but there's nothing we can do about it," Mangini said of the 21-year-old who entered the draft following his junior season. "The thing we can control is calling him, getting him the information, reviewing the information.

"We have a pretty good system in place there for keeping him up to date and talking to him as much as we can. It's not the same as being here; it's really the best that we can do based on the way the rules are set up.

"So it?s not ideal for him, for us, for anybody. But everybody's under the same rules, so you just operate that way."

GM Mike Tannenbaum said he?s begun preliminary discussions with the agent for No. 1 pick Vernon Gholston. In an effort to maintain consistency, one of the Mangini-Tannenbaum hallmarks, Mr. T said his goal is to sign Gholston by mid-August - about the time they signed Darrelle Revis last year.

Relax, he was joking.

First-round draft pick, LB Vernon Gholston, will make his offseason camp debut tomorrow. He's been finishing his schoolwork at Ohio State and, by NCAA and NFL rule, has not been eligible to participate until that's complete.

"I forgot what he looks like,'' Mangini joked.

Gholston hasn't been here since the rookie minicamp the week after the draft.

Asked how far behind Gholston will be, having missed 10 OTAs (organized team activities), Mangini said, "He'll be behind. The other rookies have taken little bites each day. He's going to have to sit down at the buffet and eat it all.''

Rookie OLB Vernon Gholston (r.) made an uneventful debut. Finally freed from his school obligations (a silly NFL/NCAA rule), he worked primarily with the second team. This is a non-contact camp, so there weren?t any pass-rushing drills. In 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, he looked a bit slow and tentative while dropping into coverage, but that?s to be expected for a guy who has been working out on his own. On one play, Gholston found himself covering fellow first-rounder Dustin Keller in the flat. Keller made the reception for about a 6-yard gain.

Mangini said he?d cut some slack for Gholston, but not a whole lot. ?It?s not like he was getting his Masters (at Ohio State),? Mangini said. ?In between ?Judge Judy? and ?Days of our Lives,? or whatever the day-time shows are, you can study.? Gholston wasn?t attending classes; he withdrew from the school over the winter to prepare for the draft, but he had to wait until his class was finished with the semester before he was allowed to report to the Jets.
