DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

We'll miss ya, big guy. But you've got nothing to return for. You have records, and accolades. It's time to go to the big leagues and carry the banner for Ohio State and lay down the law.

And try to go easy on Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn. Don't do that chest bump sack thing. I'd like whoever starts for the Browns in one piece.

Could be next year if he is the next installment of a Buckeye/Bill player  :oh:

I can see Vern making a bigger impact at the next level than Dorsey depending on which team selects each guy. Vern could have a long and successful career if givent the right chance. His fitness level and raw ability should keep him effective for a number of years also.

I agree. He needs to be in an aggressive situation where he can attack the ball carrier and QB in the backfield. The occasional zone blitz with him might also work but he needs to get after it on every down.

I agree. Despite his school record in sacks, I think Vern's strengths in the NFL will be run support, shoring up a DL spot at the end of a 3-4.

I disagree. With his size and speed he'd be a better fit at 3-4 OLB in my opinion.

By the way, it's SO nice for me to see him in the Alumni section and not current players :)

It seems as if every DE comes out of college and is immediately thrusted into some sort of 3-4 role. Plenty of teams still use the 4-3 and I think Gholston fits well as a prototypical end in one of those systems. He is plenty big enough (260+), and regardless of weight his strength will prove him comparable to the biggest 4-3 DE's. Needless to say, if he lines up at end every down, I don't see the tackles man-handling him due to lack of size.
