DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

and against a team with a good running game (LSU) the cutback can kill you. Backside is a definite important position. His lack of sack power was more due to heady play by a smart QB.

and a great gameplan.....I don't think Matt Flynn had to make many reads last night....his primary seemed to get open on a majority of those plays

Just a great/creative gameplan, that neutralized our stud playmakers on defense for the most part.

got it. makes sense. thanks for clearing that up.
btw- how did you feel vernon performed last last night ?

I've seen some negative reviews on him from last night, but I don't get why. He was the only consistent pass rusher and played the run so much better than he usually does. I guess the bad reviews were because he didn't get three sacks or something like that, but he stood out to me.

i've read some of negative opinions of his performance last night by posters in other forums but they were largely from fans of chris & jake long as there's some polarization occurring between rams fans on who the pick should be at #2 in april - so i discount for that.
where did you read the negative reviews you saw?

VG didn't get much in the way of accolades because of his (lack of) stats (2 solos, one assist, one sack/TFL). However, there are obviously ways to make a huge impact on a game without stats- like putting the Tackle 5 yards in the backfield and hurrying/forcing quick throws.

Disagree. One example, the TD to Lafell was a complete read by Flynn. He called the play at the line according to Miles. Gholston was double teams all night long that is why he was not very effective. Flynn is a gamer and he came to play last night. That is exactly what he did to Miami a few years back.

he was defineately double teamed (ciron black looks good btw) but he got his shots in - pass rush, pass cover and on the run. i thought his individual performance was better than "not very effective". how did you think dorsey's evening compared ?

Ya, the TD throw to Lafell was a beautiful throw. I am watching the game on DVR right now, and one of the things I notice, is he isn't checking down a heck of a lot, and is throwing to his first target a majority of the time.

Maybe, his first read was just that good at getting open, but to me Crowton saw lot's of holes in our defense and knew exactly where the ball had to go dependent on the offensive formations he schemed up.

Not trying to take anything away from Matt b/c he absoluelt is a gamer. Reminds me of Krenzel in many ways.

Anyways, back to big Vern.

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : Tress' breakdown: Breakdowns hurt
The Buckeyes, on the other hand, had just three seniors in the starting lineup. Depending on how many juniors declare for the NFL draft, Ohio State could make a run at a third straight appearance in the national title game.

"A little bit of it will be determined by who ends up (leaving early)," Tressel said. "I'm guessing (defensive end) Vernon Gholston for sure, because being a fourth-year guy I don't know how much more he can enhance himself draft-wise ? and I'm guessing maybe (linebacker James) Laurinaitis.

Doesn't sound like Tressel thinks Big Vern will be back.

... i went through the "ok - so who's fault is it thread" and was glad to see no one was blaming him.

...

There are two reasons you didn't see a lot of blame heaped on #50 in that thread.
  1. Blaming players is frowned on here at BP. We can discuss what can be improved, but pointing the bony finger of indignation gets at least a warning if not an infraction.
  2. The specific thread that you mention is meant as a mea culpa for people who did not adhere to the right superstition. The entire thread is a joke, something we do every time there is a loss. Doesn't happen very often...

Just other forums, but a lot of them are "ZOMGZ BIG 10 SUCKZZZZZZZZZZZ AND OHIO STATE BLOWZZZZZZZZZZZZZ". I thought he was very disruptive.

ooohhhh . . .
nevermind.

as long as we're not blaming, it's ok to critique or solicit critiques of players performance, right?
