DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

Jon Spencer, Zaneville (Central Ohio) Times Reporter:

DEFENSIVE LINE
It's probably a done deal that Vernon Gholston is heading to the NFL. He played Monday night like he already had one foot out the door. But then nobody up front distinguished themselves. Quarterback Matt Flynn was given excellent protection. Grade: F

Okay, your point is? The guy was double-teamed nearly every play and the few times he was left one on one he was disruptive. The guy was the best DE on the field.

My point??? I didn't give you my point. I gave you the point of your own hometown newspaper writer. If you want to know what I think, I think VG is awesome. I personally think he was the #3 DE in the US this year behind Chris Long and Selvie (and maybe that Patterson guy from Indiiana). It's a shame VG wasn't a factor against LSU (like I expected him to be). But that doesn't take away from how great VG was this year (and how great he was for OSU -- he tied the all-time OSU school sack record). VG was awesome during the regular season.

You are implying something here that the article did not. Specifically, you are implying that Gholston got a grade of F, as you're using it to support your point that "VG wasn't a factor against LSU." In reality, this article gives the entire line an F, and anyone who watched that game knows that OSU's DTs, who were getting blown off the ball consistently, are what brought that grade down, not Vern's play. Nice try, though.

That's hilarious. Take a look at Selvie's stats--he didn't show up after about the 5th or 6th game. He had 3 sacks in his last 7 games, and 9 of his 14.5 sacks this year came against Elon, Syracuse, UNC, and Florida Atlantic. Contrast that with Gholston, who had 7 in two of OSU's biggest games (vs. Wisconsin and @ UM).

You seemed to be insinuating that LSU shut him down and that's why you hand-picked that quote which added nothing productive to the thread. While you're at it why don't you just post every single article that mentions his name into his thread. Don't kid yourself, nobody on LSU can block Vernon one on one. LSU's scheme took him out of the game by double-teaming him and getting rid of the ball quickly most of the time when he wasn't doubled. The very few times Flynn did hold the ball Vern was getting pressure like on that early third down that forced Flynn to throw the ball away.

So maybe what should be pointed out is that both Dorsey and Gholston were doubleteamed all night. It effectively kept the tight end out of OSU's playbook. LSU, on the other hand, had at least two offensive schemes that allowed them to let the tight end loose. On one it worked for a touchdown. Both Gholston and Dorsey had decent games, but getting behind by three scores allowed LSU to get reckless with their LBs and blitz packages, which in turn meant that Dorsey couldn't be double teamed as consistently.

What a crock of shit!

Gholston had his man deep in the backfield on every play even getting doubled or chipped by the back. If Heacock would've stunted there or blitzed underneath him, Flynn would've tasted turf a heck of a lot more!

Sounds like someone is aspiring to be an ESPiN writer.

If Zanesville keeps churning out crap like that, I think I'll head there to start my Journalism career.. I probably was anyways, that's where I'm from. They could use a new sportswriter. :)

Gholston got some pressure. Wasn't the normal game for him, but considering the double teams I think it's unfair to give him an F. Actually, I don't think it is, it just is unfair.

That paper didn't give Gholston an F. It gave the defensive line an F.
