Vernon Gholston runs for a touchdown after picking up a fumble by Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bacher to put Ohio State ahead 28-0.

Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston did something yesterday he has never done before. He scored a touchdown.
His 25-yard scoop-and-scoot with a fumble, caused by an Anderson Russell hit on Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bacher, was the last of the Buckeyes' four TDs in a first-quarter avalanche. But it was special for Gholston because it was his first TD -- and he didn't just mean in his college career.
"Ever," he said with a smile.
Things happened fast on the play, a second-and-8 from the Northwestern 30. Russell came from the back side to chase down Bacher, who had rolled to the left, and the ball popped out.

Defensive Score

Gholston's TD was just a microcosm of everything going right. Buckeye leaves for everyone. Tressel may be looking to Vernon to play fullback with that speed. :wink2:

"This is my first-ever scored touchdown," said Gholston of his defensive score.
"It was only 20-some yards so I didn't really get a chance to show my speed and that I could break away," Gholston joked.
"We had a little defensive line stunt on. The safety came off the edge and I saw the strip and my eyes got big. It was just like a pot of gold sitting right there. I just wanted to get to it as quick as I could before those other guys did. Once I got it I just sprinted to the endzone."

I'm sure I speak for all married men when I plead with Vern not to warm up before the game in his form-fitting UnderArmor. I had to listen to my wife talk about his physique for the entire remainder of the afternoon. And evening. And the next morning.

You should have taken advantage of her being worked up! :tongue2:

Put on your own UnderArmor. Chicks dig it.

Unless you've got a figure like Charlie Weis.

Rest for the nicked

Junior defensive end Vernon Gholston, considered the leader of the front four, played sparingly at Purdue so he could nurse a slight ankle sprain.
"It happened about the second quarter of the Minnesota game. I kind of played through it (that night)," Gholston said. "In practice I kind of sat out a little bit, but (against Purdue) it was pretty good."
Alex Barrow started in place of Gholston, and Dexter Larrimore and Cameron Heyward also saw plenty of time on the defensive front.
"We've been playing six or eight guys all year, so you expect injuries," defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said. "So if somebody goes down, you expect somebody else to step up."
