DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

Gholston breaks through
Jim Naveau | [email protected] - 08.02.2007

?At some point, whether it?s early or late, it just clicks for the great players that come through here. For me, it was that season where I had an injury and it kept me from playing,? Gholston said.
?I really took that year and ran with it as far as spending time in the weight room and studying the game. I really worked out hard throughout the season. I knew the next year was going to be my big opportunity.
?That year was all about taking it to the next level and that?s what I did,? he said.

?My philosophy is get to the quarterback at all cost.?

?I?m definitely for the (Detroit) home teams, I love the Pistons, I love the Red Wings. But, growing up, college football was not something I was part of,? Gholston said.
?So when it was time to make the decision where to go to college, that wasn?t part of making the decision. I just made the choice that was best for me.?
The Buckeyes? double-overtime victory over Miami in the national championship game after the 2002 season also played a role in his college destination.
?Everybody knew the mystique of Miami. Everybody thought Ohio State would lose. But I saw the toughness Ohio State played with and that was something I wanted to be a part of,? Gholston said.

Ohio State teammates and Big Ten foes are trumpeting the arrival of Buckeyes defensive end Vernon Gholston.

CHICAGO -- Ohio State's Vernon Gholston was thankful to be one of the 33 players invited to attend the Big Ten's annual kickoff luncheon, but he did not feel out of place among the conference elite.
"It is a tremendous honor, being able to come here and get a day off from working out," Gholston, a junior defensive end, said yesterday. "But I have worked hard over the past couple of years ... and I would say I definitely deserve to be here."

I want to see Big Vern's best Darrion Scott imitation this year!
I want to see RBs rag dolled to the ground.
I want to see QBs running in fear and throwing the ball away from just the thought of Big Vern getting to them!
I want to see Big Vern finish with a nice body slam!
Bring the Pain, Vern! Bring the Pain! :tongue2:

"My biggest attribute is my strength. My philosophy is, at all costs, get to the quarterback," Gholston said. "But I definitely want to evolve my game, and that comes with film study, getting to know your opponents, and actually growing."

Dear Big 10 referees,

For the 2007 season, please consider calling a holding penalty when Vern is playing, because he was getting mugged on every snap last year.

Love,
Buckeye Nation

Yeah, the Penn State game was particularly bad when it came to teams holding Gholston. When the entire north end of the stadium can see him getting held (including the top of C-deck where I was) you would think there would be some yellow on the field.
