McDevitt football star Noah Spence lauded by Dauphin County commissioners for athletic, academic feats

Ohio State-bound football standout Noah Spence got praise and a lecture when Dauphin County commissioners presented him with a proclamation this morning.
Commissioners applauded the Bishop McDevitt High School senior and Susquehanna Township resident not only for his gridiron feats, which have won him national recognition, but also for being an honor student with a reputation for community involvement.
"As tremendous as you are as an athlete, you are an even better person," Commissioner Mike Pries said.
Spence's parents, Greg and Helen, also received kudos for placing him on the right path.
Yet Commissioners George Hartwick III and Jeff Haste told Spence his high profile comes with high expectations. They urged him to keep staying on the high moral ground as he plays at college football's highest level.
"We need some real community heroes," Hartwick said. "You didn't sign up to be a role model, but that's who you are. ... You've got the tools inside and out."
Spence, who said he plans to major in sociology, vowed to keep his focus on God, his family and his studies. "I'll make you guys proud," he said.
Noah Spence, DE, Ohio State: The top-rated recruit to sign with a Big Ten team in February, Spence was rated as the No. 4 overall prospect in the 2012 class. It's easy to see why, as he's a 6-foot-4, 245-pound athletic specimen who looks ready to chase after opposing quarterbacks from Day One. Urban Meyer said he doesn't plan to redshirt many freshmen and expects his defensive line recruits to contribute right away. If not Spence, then Se'Von Pittman, Adolphus Washington or Tommy Schutt could all make their presence known up front on defense as true freshmen.
Simon, the first player in the weight room each day, is no longer able to arrive alone, which means he began dragging teammates out of bed. Among the regulars are sophomore linebackers Ryan Shazier and Curtis Grant and freshman defensive end Noah Spence.
"Here's a true freshman learning from the best," Meyer said. "Now [Simon] is giving something back to the team. Him going lifting at 6 a.m. does nothing for our team. It does something for him. But this is not an individual sport."
