I'm saying he hasn't earned it. And despite all of your rage, you still haven't provided anything to show his worth as a coach

The question with Vrabel is not whose fault is the lackluster play of our LBs. The question is did he show something that would make an Urban Meyer say "Wow, I gotta keep this guy."

That didn't happen and I am good with replacing Vrabel for the very same reason I am good with replacing Fick.

Per The Man himself:

the unique experiences he has had as a player, coupled with the things he has already accomplished as a coach and recruiter for Ohio State, has prepared Mike for this opportunity

if only you were as quick to admit and honor your misses :p

actually I'd argue neither was fully right or wrong, seeing as you were adamant that it wasn't enough time to judge him fairly... along comes urban and he proves himself in a much smaller window.

I'm glad a more qualified football mind felt he was worthy. Obviously he knows more than me.

It seems pretty clear from both the release wording and various reports that he had to prove himself after the urban hire, which would suggest he hadn't earned it yet :p

Clearly the LB talent and evals weren't his handiwork, resulting in sub standard LBs to work with. the bad luck wasn't either, with the scandal, driving stud Ejuan Price away and Williams' Injury destroying the defensive scheme.

I'm glad he proved himself worthy. That is an impressive feat given Urban's standards.

Who was right, wrong or some kind of tie is just tomfoolery. Getting Vrabel to join Urban's army of champions is the only meaningful win.

No one is more disappointed in our LB play this season than I am. I also expected Vrabel to maybe have more of a positive impact on the LB development as a unit. However, I am also common-sense-smart enough to know that I can't automatically lay all, or even most, of the blame on Vrabel. Maybe Sweat played better last year with Rolle covering more ground than he is this year with Sabino out there. Maybe Klein just isn't what we expected. Maybe Sabino will never have the light switch on fully. There are just too many dynamics involved to make one concrete claim that "Our LB corps hasn't developed so it's Vrabel's fault".

And maybe Klein, Shazier, Sabino and Sweat aren't Hawk, Carpenter, Schlegel and Laurenitius. Think of it -- four players who have made it in the NFL in one linebacker set. Think of this too, it took an injury to Carpenter to get Laurenitus in the line up full time. I don't think the current set match up in size, speed or overall talent and that's not dissing the current players, it's merely pointing out how good their predecessors were.

OSU has had so much talent at the position the last 2 decades that the level of play could fall off even with excellent coaching.

Kinda agree with those that say that Vrabel has not 'earned it'. However, have to remember that everyone has been given an initial chance. Even you (look in the mirror). Maybe with the powerhouse that Urban is creating staffwise he felt he could take a chance on Vrabel's coaching/recruiting abilities. Dunno. Possibly he looked at the impact of Vrabel's body of work as a pro, and knew that he was a recent enough NFL player that there would be identification by the newer HSers. Dunno. Maybe he was Earl Bruce's 'Christmas present' to put Vrabel on staff. Still dunno.

Maybe the talk with Belichek was enough for Urban (on work ethic, etc) that Urban could take a chance. Hope so. Nevertheless, whether he has already earned it or not, Urban Meyer is 'taking a chance' on Vrabel and giving him his start in coaching. To my knowledge he's only been a player, albeit at the highest level, and not had any hands on coaching experience. He has seen the good, bad, and ugly of coaching, and if he's smart, he filed away the 'things to do, and the things NOT to do' as a coach. As a young man, enthusiasm is an important trait, which we lose as we age, and experience takes up that slack.

He's a Buckeye coach for as long as he's capable, and he'll probably make mistakes along the way, as you and I (most certainly I) did as we were becoming bloodied and savvy. It's a journey and not a destination.

Have Happy Holidays to all BPers......and let's hope for a few more 5*'s under Urban/OSU's tree Christmastime. <><

Good. Great to have Luke back with the linebackers. Mike played D-line in college, so he is familiar with the position. It's great to see him on the recruiting trail, seems like he has been Urban's left hand man (Fickell is his right) while the rest of the staff was put in place.

Vrabes ripped the LBs in yesterdays game. Something to the tune of "get your shit together. I won't let you embarass this team and my university by acting like a bunch of bitches". The sideline reporter repeated it all except for the "bitches" part. She said, he said a bad word there so I cant repeat it.

Love the fire. Keep that going forever please.
