Andrew Sweat, left, is learning a lot about being a linebacker from Ohio State assistant coach and three-time Super Bowl winner Mike Vrabel.

Mike Vrabel is still learning on the job as a first-year assistant coach at Ohio State, but the linebackers are learning from him, too.

When he talks, senior Andrew Sweat said, the whole room listens, and for good reason.

?He won three Super Bowls,? Sweat said.

As a player, Vrabel ? a former Ohio State All-America defensive end and the best friend of first-year coach Luke Fickell ? has done what current players can only dream of. In 14 NFL seasons, he made one Pro Bowl and gained fame as a swing man for some of the New England Patriots? better defenses.

But Fickell knew that coaching would be something different.

?I just wanted to make sure as we went into camp that he had an idea what 17-, 18-year-old guys are going to react like, respond like, at times,? Fickell said. ?He understood that, and I think it?s shown.?

Vrabel came in with a theme in mind, coaching players to their potential.

?We don?t want everybody necessarily to be the best, we just want their best effort,? he said. ?If we can get that every day, we?ll be good.?

Coach Mike Vrabel makes instant connection with OSU linebackers
Aug 28, 2011

COLUMBUS -- This was probably the first time in 15 years Mike Vrabel stood on a football field in mid-August without cursing under his breath.

NFL training camp can make the alternative -- 80-hour work weeks as a college coach -- look eminently more desirable.

"I haven't missed one day (of camp)," said Vrabel, who retired after 14 years in the pros to return to his alma mater as Ohio State's linebackers coach. "I like hitting that field with tennis shoes on my feet and no helmet on my head."

I absolutely LOVE how our defense played yesterday, with blitz packages and QB pressure I haven't seen on this team since Dantonio was still the DC. Not sure if it had anything to do with Fickell being the head coach now or Vrabel in control of the LBs, but gotta love the change in tactics on D.

Just curious, who did Fick send out for the coin toss yesterday? He doesn't have named captains yet correct, but is he picking guys week to week?
He said there would be votes for captain weekly. This week's captains were already announced. I don't remember who they were, so if someone would be kind enough...
