DE Mike Vrabel (All B1G, All American, Pro Bowl, All Pro, Super Bowl Champion)

The last LB coach (fickell) didn't get much out of those three either.. although Sweat is a solid player..

If we're gonna judge Vrabel based on 3-4 months of coaching, does he get no credit for having Shazier ready to play and play pretty damn well as true freshman?

One thing to remember with Meyer, is that he's tight with Belichik, who loves Mike Vrabel and thinks he's gonna be an excellent coach.

I don't want to pollute Ifeadi's thread with this, and I apologize to the mods if they need to move this.

But to answer your question... it comes down to the coaching.

The group has underperformed, and MV has had no affect as a recruiter. I love Mike, but this isn't a job for a first time coach.

There's numerous reasons as to why Sabino didn't pan out. It's also not like MV recruited and selected these guys...

Anyways, is there anything new with I.O.? I think keeping Vrabel, who should be a good coach, helps us land a 5 star recruit.. I'm all in.

Vrabel isint the only one to blame. At practice, you know Fickell is with Vrabel and the linebackers. He cant go out there and make Klein run faster, or make Sabino take better angles/tackle better. Look at how hes developing Shazier. You want a guy like that on the staff.

The mods could move this to the Vrabel thread but I got to add one thing. I'm of the opinion that the first year you coach anything, you end up learning a an enormous amount. It would have been nice if Vrabel had prepped a year elsewhere, but hey, he may end up the greatest linebacker coach ever. I hope he gets a shot.

How the [censored] would you be privy to the former, and this is exactly the job for a first time coach with Mike's pedigree.

It's called insiders subscription, from in the know people. And no it's not, a GA position is for a first timer, Mike has pedigree as a player not a Coach... no matter what you think his role "might" have been in KC.

I'm not here to go against Mike, or any player on Ohio State roster. So, I have nothing more to say on it.

All I'm saying, and have been saying from the beginning... is I highly doubt Mike will be retained by UM. This isn't about loyalty, who he played for, or how many rings he has... UM is straight business, and not one to teach on the fly.

Maybe I'll be wrong, but the reality will set in, and Buckeye blinders will have to come off, if and when UM starts to pick his staff.

You're right, he's been working with garbage...

Andrew Sweat #6 MLB 4 stars

Offers: Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame

Etienne Sabino #2 MLB 5 Stars

Offers: USC, Miami (FL), Florida

Storm Klein #10 SLB 4 Stars

And a 4 Star in Shazier and 5 Star in Grant.... even though they're are freshmen and still learning, so just for the argument of talent level at the
position.

How many of the teams that offered these players would take them now ?

I have no idea what's involved with a LB coach, but when these guys were recruited with all the *******'s, was there anyway to tell that Klein can't get off a block or that Sabino can't learn how to take a correct angle after nearly 4 years in the program for both ?

At this point, I'd like to throw Grant in there to see if he could do any better, even if he's making some mistakes.

I don't know how any message board denizen can make a knowledgeable call on how effective a position coach is. Is it talent, teaching, or motivation that prevents a player from being fully effective? This isn't something that is trivial to evaluate.

Clearly our LB play this season has been substandard. It will be up to our next coach to assess whether Vrabel's being here has exacerbated the problem or whether he is essential to solving it. Also, whether Vrabel's approach and personality are compatible with the next coach's objectives.

And to those that want to bring up Shazier's success...Shazier is a bad ass, pure athletic specimen, but you can't say MV taught Shazier how to be an athletic freak.

I love Etienne Sabino, I love Storm Klein and I love Andrew Sweat... the group as a whole has underperformed.

I also love Mike Vrable, hell was even friendly with him when he was at Ohio State... this is real talk here, not Buckeye blinder.

How'd Mike D'Andrea work out for ya there, Sparky?

Weak come back, and not relative.

Again, this is about a cohesive unit as a whole, not looking at individual performances. Underperformed this season.

EDIT: Would you like to ask how Jefferson Kelly worked out while you're at it?

It depends on how serious he is about a coaching career. Does he want to develop as a coach or work for his buddy?

That's exactly what I was getting at... now, to be even more speculative, if Luke, as rumored, is retained as Asst. head coach, and MV does want to keep hanging out with his buddy and working on his coaching career, I'd imagine Urban Meyer will have carefully vetted him... I just can't see Luke (or anyone) having so much pull as to tell Urban who he can or can't have as a LB coach... IF he gets the job, I'm assuming its because Urban thinks he will do a good job in ALL facets of position coaching, including player development, game planning and recruiting...

...dare I say we... trust the coaches?
