Gibson descends roster, ascends OSU depth chart

Euclid grad switches jersey from 37 to 90, which coincides with a move into D-line rotation

A change in jersey numbers might seem trivial.
For Thaddeus Gibson, it was a fresh start, one that reminded him of the days when he wreaked havoc on Northeast Ohio defenses as a senior at Euclid in 2005.
This fall at Ohio State, Gibson will sport the 90 he wore so well with the Panthers, when he had eight sacks and 14 quarterback hurries despite facing constant double- and triple-teams as a senior.
Gibson has shed the No. 37 he wore last year, but he's added weight - he's listed at 240 pounds, up from 228 a season ago - and expectations, the latter coming as a result of a phenomenal spring in which he got the attention of almost everyone who follows football in Columbus and the national Web sites.

Ohio State defensive end Thaddeus Gibson a standout in practice

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus- Rafaele Gibson plays tennis with his younger brother Thaddeus and has witnessed his transformation.
"He attacks the ball like the Incredible Hulk," Gibson said recently. "It's like he's trying to kill it."
His Ohio State teammates have seen that side of Thaddeus Gibson as well, when he's dealing with blockers and last year at a practice when his argument with a coach led the Buckeyes to leave Gibson in Columbus when they traveled to Purdue.

Terror coming off of the edge

COLUMBUS -- Last October, as Ohio State was marching toward another Big Ten championship, Thaddeus Gibson took his own march. Right off the field.

Gibson was irritated over his lack of playing time and got into a shouting match with a coach. He finally had enough, and walked off the field.

''He had a decision to make,'' defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said. ''I didn't think he would make any other decision than the one he did, but he definitely had a choice to make.''

Gibson was suspended for one game, at Purdue, for his actions. At that point, he could swallow hard, accept his suspension and return, or he could walk away. Gibson chose to stay, finishing the year with 11 tackles, including three for a loss.

He had a sack and a forced fumble in the win over Wisconsin and hasn't slowed down since. He moved from linebacker to defensive end in the spring and has been the biggest surprise through the first few days of fall camp.

Buckeyes? Gibson matured
Published:Saturday, August 16, 2008
By KEN GORDON

The defensive end has come a long way since almost leaving the team in 2007.

COLUMBUS ? In high school, Thaddeus Gibson?s path was simple and straight: See quarterback, get quarterback. Be a star, bask in the attention, land an Ohio State scholarship.

Easy.

In college, though, like so many teenagers, Gibson found a few bends in the road.

The Buckeyes team he joined in 2006 was loaded with linebackers. He had to redshirt, to learn a more complex scheme, to sit and wait.

Even when the redshirt came off last fall, he was down on the depth chart, a mere role player. For a guy who burns with a desire to play football, that was torturous.

?He wondered why other guys were getting opportunities and he wasn?t,? said Tom Gibbons, Gibson?s defensive coordinator at Euclid High School and now the coach. ?He was 19 years old, and maturity takes time. That?s why they give a guy a five-year scholarship.?

BN$--Gibson Breaks Into Starting Lineup

Thad discusses his journey and lessons to becoming the starter. He notes that JT has uncharacteristically started advising on the defensive side of the ball now also.

Me thinks that JT understands more than what a lot of people are willing to give him credit. While I'm not pleased that it's come to this, I am happy that he's stepping in as a leader.

I agree. People seem to think that JT doesn't really know that much and runs a very simple offense and team. I think this is far from the truth and people seem to want to simplify everything he does.

Like T.O., JT has millions of reasons to care and understand more than just an offense.
