DE/LB Jonathan Newsome (Birmingham Stallions)

Ball State LB Newsome suspended
Updated Aug 23, 2012
MUNCIE, Ind. (AP)

Ball State linebacker Jonathan Newsome has been suspended for the first two games of the season for violating team rules.

Coach Pete Lembo announced the suspension Thursday. The Muncie Star Press reported that Newsome was arrested Monday after a bag containing marijuana was allegedly found in his wallet. The newspaper says he is facing a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor.

Newsome sat out last season after transferring from Ohio State, where he spent the previous two seasons.

Lembo says the school is fully aware of the allegations and made the decision based on the information the school had.

The redshirt junior will miss games against Eastern Michigan and Clemson. He would be eligible to play on Sept. 15 against Indiana.

After serving a two-game suspension to start the season, junior defensive end Jonathan Newsome was inserted into Ball State's starting lineup. The Ohio State?s transfer?s debut as a Ball State football player couldn?t have gone much better.

Newsome recorded two sacks in the game as well as Ball State?s first sack of the season.

Newsome said Tressel?s ouster played a big part in him choosing to transfer out, and he still speaks of the coach with reverence.
?He?s a great coach,? Newsome said. ?He was like a father figure kind of, just somebody I could go talk to. He was more than just a football coach. He actually cared about where I was going in life, what I was doing. Even when I made mistakes at Ohio State, he sat down and talked to me because he?s dealt with stuff like that before. Everything that he told me, I won?t forget.?

Jonathan Newsome, the a former Ohio State linebacker who transferred to Ball State in 2011 after Jim Tressel?s resignation, still speaks of highly of his former coach.

Before the Cardinals? upset of No. 23 Toledo last week, the Cleveland Glenville graduate even tweeted one of Tressel?s adages about the importance of playing best in November.

?He was like a father figure ? somebody I could go talk to,? Newsome told The Star-Press of Muncie, Ind. ?He was more than just a football coach. He actually cared about where I was going in life, what I was doing. Even when I made mistakes at Ohio State, he sat down and talked to me because he?s dealt with stuff like that before. Everything that he told me, I won?t forget.?

Newsome, who was suspended from Ball State?s first two games because of a marijuana charge, is mostly playing defensive end. In eight games, he had 40 tackles, including 91/2 for loss, and six sacks.

FOOTBALL: Newsome ready to make a name for Ball State defense
The Daily News
Matt McKinney
Friday, August 16, 2013

Few Ball State football players come as transfers from large, nationally-known programs. Even fewer make the splash that Jonathan Newsome did last year in his first year of eligibility for the Cardinals after transferring from Ohio State.

After a two-game suspension to open the 2012 season, the senior All-MAC Second Team defensive end led the team with 8.5 sacks. Now, with a year under his belt, he?s ready to do even more damage to MAC quarterbacks.

Newsome said the main difference between coming into last season and this season doesn?t have a lot to do with what happens on the field.

?I?m a little bit smarter, as far as the playbook,? Newsome said. ?I know the plays now. Everything?s not so new to me.?

His position coach, Chad Wilt, said Newsome has done his work in the film room, leading to better results on the field.

?I think [Jonathan] has developed some time into studying how to be a better pass rusher,? Wilt said. ?Last year was a little bit on talent. He understands techniques and offensive linemen?s sets a little better. Last year, he could?ve had a couple more [sacks] if he had been a little bit more disciplined.?

With another year under his belt, Newsome has taken on a leadership role with the team.

?Being a veteran guy, I?m trying to help the younger guys,? Newsome said. ?Instead of learning I?m helping the younger guys come along.?

Newsome named senior defensive tackle Nate Ollie as somebody else on the defensive line who will help take some pressure off him when rushing the passer.

Ollie had 8.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss over the last two seasons, and earned All-MAC Third-Team honors for the 2012 season.

?I think everybody on the line helps me out because you can?t just worry about me, you have to worry about the other guys, too,? Newsome said.

Take it with a grain of SB Nation salt:

Jonathan Newsome - Newsome was projected to be a sixth- or seventh-rounder heading into the Combine. After posting impressive numbers with the defensive lineman and showing the ability to stand up and play some outside linebacker in the popular 3-4 scheme he is now looking more like a possible fifth- or sixth-rounder.

Not quite the athlete of the other two MAC winners, Newsome needed to show he could hold his own in the drills, and he did that. Warren Sapp was especially impressed with Newsome's performances in the drills on Monday saying "Jonathan Newsome of Ball State is making some money today" at one point in his workouts. I think there are still some questions about the fluidity of his hips, and whether or not he is strong enough to provide the explosion off the line he'd need to be a successful traditional pass-rushing defensive end, but it's clear after Indy that he has some things going for him and with a little development in the right system could turn into a successful edge rusher. Expect to hear his name called somewhere in the late fifth, early sixth rounds.

MAC Stars at the Combine

He was top 15 among DL in broad jump, vertical, 3-cone and 40.
