Newsome absence explained: Dog house
By TIM MAY
On the Big Ten spring teleconference today, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was asked why there had been few sightings of Jonathan Newsome on the field thus far this month. As the Buckeyes seek two new starters at linebacker, Newsome was expected to be a prime contender for playing time.
Tressel said there is a good reason why that hasn't happened.
?You know that I?ve been known to have a dog house, and Jonathan is kind of in and out of it simply because we?re not 100 percent sure he?s doing everything he needs to do to the best of his abilities,? said Tressel, who didn?t give specifics but is believed to be academic related. ?So therefore he?s only gotten part of the privileges.
?As soon as he feels and we feel he?s heading in the right direction, he?ll have his opportunity to regain those privileges. ? I don?t expect him to be in (the dog house) long, but sometimes we have to do what we think will help a young person learn.?
Doghouse closed
Tressel said last week that linebacker Jonathan Newsome hadn't been seen on the field much because he was in Tressel's doghouse for academic issues. But he might play some today because "the doghouse is during school days," Tressel said. "The doghouse is closed on the weekends."
Newsome unlikely to play in 2010
It appears that one name can be subtracted from the linebacker mix for Ohio State this fall.
Jonathan Newsome has been removed from the Buckeyes? roster.
?I think that would be an indication of his status for this fall,? OSU spokesperson Jerry Emig said.
Emig said Newsome was enrolled in summer school at Ohio State.
Newsome?s high-school coach at Glenville, Ted Ginn Sr., said he believed Newsome planned to transfer but did not know where.
Newsome played in 13 games as a sophomore in 2010. He was credited with 15 tackles.
He was mostly held out of this spring?s practice by then-coach Jim Tressel for academic reasons.

The Buckeye career of linebacker Jonathan Newsome appears over.
The school confirmed Wendesday that Newsome has been removed from the fall roster and will not likely play in 2011.
Newsome had missed the entire Spring Football session this year due to academic concerns. He recorded 15 tackles in 2010 as a reserve linebacker and special teams performer.
Newsome's high school coach, Cleveland Glenville's Ted Ginn Sr., has told several media outlets he suspects Newsome may transfer to a new school.
I think Christian Bryant will make you change that tune. Very impressive young DB there. And Bryant Browning was a fine student-athlete for the Buckeyes over the past four seasons.southcampus;1960432; said:... how many Glenville busts have we had? We've talked about "The pipeline" in the past when we were getting guys like TG2, Troy Smith, Donte Whitner, etc., but lately we've been unlucky with guys like Rob Rose, Ray Small, and now Newsome.

Newsome misses most of spring drills, will be transferring to Ball State
By JASON LLOYD - Akron Beacon Journal
CHICAGO -- Linebacker Jonathan Newsome is transferring to Ball State, according to his Twitter account. Hours after Ohio State coach Luke Fickell acknowledged on Friday that Newsome wouldn't be part of the preseason camp, Newsome wrote he was leaving.
"I love O State n all my teammates n friends i made here," Newsome wrote. "however i gotta keep it movin."
Newsome will have to sit this season under transfer rules, but will have two years of eligibility remaining. He had 14 tackles last season, primarily on special teams, and departs with 19 tackles for his career.
The Buckeyes have to replace both Brian Rolle and Ross Homan at linebacker, meaning Newsome would've had ample opportunities to land a starting spot. But coach Jim Tressel held him out of the majority of spring drills because of academics.
Newsome was not listed on the team's preseason roster, leaving a transfer inevitable.

Ball State first-year head football coach Pete Lembo has announced the addition of two transfers -- Jonathan Newsome and Toney Williams -- to the Cardinals roster.
"We are pleased to welcome Jonathan and Toney to Ball State," Lembo says. "We knew Toney from as far back as his high school days in Atlanta and Jonathan has several former high school teammates currently in our football program. These relationships should help ease their transition to a new environment. We look forward to getting them acclimated this year and hope they will make a positive contribution in future seasons."
Newsome spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons at Ohio State as a linebacker. He played in five games in 2009 and played in all 13 contests in 2010. Newsome earned his first collegiate start vs. Minnesota as a sophomore. Newsome is 6-foot-3, 220 lbs., and played primarily on special teams for the Buckeyes. A graduate of Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio, Newsome totalled 101 tackles and 17 sacks as a senior. He was a team captain as a senior and named All-Ohio Second Team. As a junior, Newsome managed 72 tackles and 13 sacks.
The initial depth chart on Ball State's Spring Prospectus indicated that Kukwa was competing with Ohio State transfer Jonathan Newsome to be the starting right defensive end.
