"If you've played in three games or if you play in the second half of the season, you're spent"
Missing personnel: Receiver Duron Carter and defensive end Jonathan Newsome. Jim Tressel did not specify a reason, but said they both were in similar situations. That is probably an academic issue, as Carter was ineligible for the Rose Bowl. My guess is Tressel is having them sit out spring as a means of emphasizing the importance of keeping up the grades.
Newsome makes his debut. The only bigger surprise than Pryor in the brace Friday was seeing No. 55 running around during drills with the linebackers. Sophomore Jonathan Newsome had been absent from the first 10 practices this spring because of academic reasons, but made his spring debut Friday. He worked mostly with the third-team defense at Sam linebacker and a little bit at the ?Star,? but also got a few reps with the second-team defense. It will take a while for Newsome to work his way back, but the kid just looks like a football player.
Making up fast
Linebacker Jonathan Newsome had to sit out the first nine spring practices because of academic difficulties, but he was cleared to rejoin the team Friday and appears intent on making up for lost time.
In the scrimmage, he had two fumble recoveries, batted down a pass and, on a botched field-goal attempt, popped holder Derek Erwin as he was scrambling to throw.
"You couldn't tell he missed any time," starting middle linebacker Brian Rolle said of Newsome. "(On Friday) he was in here watching film all day on things that he missed, and me and him talked one on one, and I told him, 'Don't worry about the past. Things happen. As long as you know you've got your things straight and know where you want to be, everything will be all right.'"
Jonathan Newsome is a player. Common sense would say that it takes time for a player to work himself back into the mix after missing the first 10 practices of spring ball. But it was a lack of common sense that kept Jonathan Newsome out in the first place. In his first two days back with the team, Newsome has already shown himself to be one of the better linebackers on the team. Teammate Brian Rolle recently compared him to Etienne Sabino, and he sure looked like him out there Saturday as he was showing off his athleticism at the Sam linebacker position during the scrimmage.

Meanwhile, Newsome answered the bell at strongside linebacker after Andrew Sweat ? a first-year starter in his own right ? was held out of action against the Bobcats for an undisclosed injury. Newsome was credited with just one tackle but like Johnson seemed to fit right into the opening.
?He did pretty good,? Rolle said. ?Having him jump in and really not knowing he was going to start, he did a great job. He got his assignments down and really did a good job.
?I was comfortable with him. I felt like in practice when he was in there he didn?t panic or anything. When he got on the field I never noticed he was there because I felt like he was doing his job and not asking ?Who do I have?? or anything like that. He was doing his job and getting in position and executing.?
Newsome is a key contributor on OSU?s maligned kickoff cover team and admitted he was more intent on helping the Buckeyes make progress in that regard. He was the mainstay of the unit as the coaches sprinkled in several different defensive backs, linebackers and even running backs Jordan Hall and Jaamal Berry to slow down the OU return men.
?I?m just focused on being the best special teams player I can be,? said Newsome, true sophomore from Cleveland Glenville. ?Right now on those kickoffs I?m trying to make sure they don?t take anything back on us. Then when I go in on base (defense) I just play my game.
?They double (gap) four a lot. I?m number four. So I just hold up my gap and beat the double teams, just do my job. If everybody does their 1/11th then we?ll get that done. It?s got to be done together.?
Despite all the shuffling ? and a touchdown return by Ohio U?s Julian Posey that was called back because of a penalty ? the concentration on covering kicks worked. The Bobcats averaged just 20.9 yards on eight runbacks.
Newsome also contributed to a defensive effort that held OU to just seven first downs, 158 total yards and only one score. He admitted having a fluttery stomach when he found out on Wednesday he may start and again right before the game. But lining up in the same linebacking corps with Rolle and Homan clamed his nerves quickly.
?I?m comfortable with whoever I?m next to because I trust the guy next to me,? he said. ?Everybody talks about Silver Bullet defense so I trust the guy next to me to do my job. I know he?s going to do his.
?I was comfortable out there. When the game first started there was some nervousness, but I was ready to go. And being out there with the first-team defense I know everybody is going to do their job. It makes it a lot easier for me.?
Newsome was told by the coaches midweek that Sweat likely would be out and he?d be in the lineup.
?It was exciting,? he said. ?It was like the Miami (Fla.) game for me. I just wanted to prove that I could go out there and play.?
Newsome's shot
With outside linebacker Ross Homan out because of an apparent sprained foot, Newsome is expected to get his first start in the three-man linebacker corps with Brian Rolle and Andrew Sweat.
"I think Jon is a great player," Sweat said. "He's young, but he has great skills, he has great hands. If you play (strong-side) linebacker, you have to be able to shed blockers a lot. And he's progressing well."
