DE Lawrence Wilson (official thread)

It didn't look that bad on the replay, so I doubt that other ligaments have been torn. Typically, you don't have MCL or LCL damage unless it's a McGahee-esq type of dislocation. There is almost always some meniscus damage when an ACL goes, but that's pretty minor, it will create soreness from time to time throughout his life, but it's no big deal. (I know that part first hand.)

He'll probably be out for spring practice, but that's ok for an experienced guy. I would expect to see him at practice next summer, at or near 100%.

I feel for the dude though. He's gotta be bummed.

Very Sad news- LW has a torn ACL.....He has had a really bad couple of years. This is going to put a load on Thad, Rob Rose, and Heyward.

Per jwinslow, osugrad21 started a thread on Wilson's injury about 11 hours before your post on the torn ACL. Also, being very happy to have been to first to post such bad news won't exactly hold you in higher regard here...

OSU NOTEBOOK
Wilson out for season with injured knee

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus- Last year, Lawrence Wilson didn't make it through one half of football. This year, at least he made it through half the season.
Both seasons ended the same way for the Ohio State defensive end, too early and with surgery waiting.
After breaking a bone in his right leg last season, Wilson is out for 2008 after injuring his left knee against Purdue, according to Ohio State coach Jim Tressel. Safety Anderson Russell said Wilson tore his ACL.
"I feel terrible for Lawrence. I feel worse for Lawrence than I feel for us," Tressel said, "because anybody can sprain an ankle and you not have him in that game. But for a guy to go through a surgery a year ago, going to have to go through a surgery now . . . man, he's a great kid, but unfortunately, that's what happens in this game."
Wilson, a fourth-year junior out of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, started all seven games for the Buckeyes. He hadn't shown the same explosiveness he did in his brief time last year, with 18 tackles and just one sack in seven games. The Buckeyes already rotated their defensive line, so with Thaddeus Gibson starting at one end, replacing Wilson should just mean more snaps for Curtis Terry, Rob Rose and Nathan Williams. Cameron Heyward, who moved to defensive tackle, could also see more time back at end.
"We're not sure who's going to play that position," Terry said, "so right now it's a competition."

I think the general recovery time for an ACL is something like 6-8 months. That said, everyone's body is different, and some people never really come back from the injury.

Yep. 2 years in a row might just suck the motivation out of him. That really sucks because he was so good.

My sadness goes out to the kid. I hope this doesn't turn into anything nagging. Recently, we have had tremendous athletes with much promise get hit with some serious injuries - D'Andrea being the spokesman for it.

Keep fighting Lawrence.

Where does Lawrence Wilson stand at the moment?
He's working out, he's getting better, he's rehabbing. I think spring is iffy. I'm not sure whether he's going to be back (until preseason camp). I'm not sure that will be decided until we get a little bit closer. I would imagine he'll be running and doing some things.

After two season-ending injuries, do you have to adjust expectations for him?

Shoot, I think he's just working his butt off and I would imagine - he's given no indication of having any problems. Any time you're coming off a couple injuries back-to-back, year-ending injuries back-to-back, he's going to have to work through it. But I think he's capable and ready to do that. I think he's anxious to get back out there and play ball.

Lawrence Wilson's last two seasons haven?t exactly gone according to plan.

After playing in 24 games his first two seasons out of Akron?s St. Vincent-St. Mary High School where he was ranked a Ohio?s top defensive end, Wilson was redshirted in 2007 after breaking his right leg in the first game of the season. Last year Wilson played in seven games before tearing his left ACL which sidelined him for yet another season.

During the offseason, Wilson has been focusing on the muscles in his legs more and working on getting healthier and stronger. But the road to recovery has not been easy.

"It's tough," Wilson said. "I just take it one day at a time. I tell myself I have to go as hard as I can and let tomorrow and the future take care of itself. If I keep my mind focused and stay positive, everything will work out."

During spring practice, Wilson is not participating in any full contact drills, but when summer starts he plans to be back 100 percent and will be ready to prove himself when that time comes.

"I feel like I have to prove myself again," Wilson said. "Everyone knows I'm still here. They hear me around the locker room and everything. I just need to improve and prove myself again."

Typically an ACL takes six to nine months to fully repair. Wilson is about a month and a half away from being back to full strength. He is finding support from family, teammates, coaches and the Ohio State fans. He received letters of support from fans that were sent to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center when he suffered his first injury. This time around, Wilson appreciated the more direct contact he had with fans, with them sending notes of encouragement through his Ohio State email.

Teammates also appreciate what Wilson brings to the field, even though he can't be fully active in practice.

"Lawrence is one of the vocal leaders on the team and just having him around encourages us," teammate and friend Thaddeus Gibson said. "With him just being around is something we need. He's crazy. He'll get you going - always cracking jokes and always laughing. He's in really good spirits every day."

Wilson, 21, has faced many obstacles while trying to chase his dream of playing Ohio State football, but he had learned to take it one day at a time.

"I tell myself I have to go as hard as I can and let tomorrow and the future take care of itself."

Ohio State football: Wilson copes with another comeback

Lawrence Wilson is one of OSU's best defensive ends when healthy.

Lawrence Wilson has worked like crazy to rehabilitate his injured knee, but it's his mind that really matters.

Through those long hours of stretching, lifting and grunting, questions run through an athlete's head: Will I ever be the same? Will the leg (arm, back, etc.) hold up? Can it happen again?

Unfortunately for Wilson, he knows the answer to the last question. The Ohio State defensive end suffered a broken right leg in the 2007 opener and sat out the rest of the season. Seven games into his return, in October 2008, he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Forget what the X-rays and MRIs say. They don't reveal the psychological scars. Athletes often have trouble dealing with suddenly feeling weak and vulnerable.

Wilson has been through it twice. How will he respond?

"It is hard on you," defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said. "You go through one, it's bad enough, and then start back in and it looks like you're coming along and you start to get a little confidence back and get some improvement, (and the) same thing happens.

"So from a mental standpoint, it's tough. And now to come back (again) and make a go of it "

The train of thought ends there because there is no resolution at this point. Wilson is five months removed from surgery and not cleared for contact in spring practice. He hopes to be 100 percent by the summer, in time for his fifth and final season of eligibility.

"I just take it one day at a time," Wilson said. "I tell myself I have to go as hard as I can today; do rehab the hardest I can, and then I let tomorrow and the future take care of itself."

Lawrence Wilson

Issue date: 6/8/09 Section: Commencement

Commencement is just ahead, and although it went so fast, I really enjoyed the Ohio State experience. As a freshman, you are just trying to get adjusted and graduation seems so far away, but it comes sooner than you think, and your thought processes and life skills develop every day you are here.

When I came to college, I was young and a little bit immature - I guess most people are that way - but my experiences here have given me a different outlook on life.

I love playing football for Ohio State, but way beyond that, I'm definitely glad I went to college. I matured as a man, I learned to take on and handle more and more responsibility, and I think I can live on my own and handle what comes up in the future. And the people! There are so many people that I will remember the rest of my life: professors, classmates, teammates, coaches. You meet a little slice of the whole world when you come to Ohio State.

There are things I will miss that will always mean Ohio State to me: Mirror Lake, midterms and finals, Carmen Ohio, everyone storming the field after 1 vs. 2, great games and the heartbreak of losing, with everything colored scarlet and gray. The graduation ceremony will be exciting (and probably sweltering hot!) but those will be the memories I am thinking of while I wear that cap and gown.
