Lawrence Wilson is one of OSU's best defensive ends when healthy.
Lawrence Wilson has worked like crazy to rehabilitate his injured knee, but it's his mind that really matters.
Through those long hours of stretching, lifting and grunting, questions run through an athlete's head: Will I ever be the same? Will the leg (arm, back, etc.) hold up? Can it happen again?
Unfortunately for Wilson, he knows the answer to the last question. The Ohio State defensive end suffered a broken right leg in the 2007 opener and sat out the rest of the season. Seven games into his return, in October 2008, he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Forget what the X-rays and MRIs say. They don't reveal the psychological scars. Athletes often have trouble dealing with suddenly feeling weak and vulnerable.
Wilson has been through it twice. How will he respond?
"It is hard on you," defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said. "You go through one, it's bad enough, and then start back in and it looks like you're coming along and you start to get a little confidence back and get some improvement, (and the) same thing happens.
"So from a mental standpoint, it's tough. And now to come back (again) and make a go of it "
The train of thought ends there because there is no resolution at this point. Wilson is five months removed from surgery and not cleared for contact in spring practice. He hopes to be 100 percent by the summer, in time for his fifth and final season of eligibility.
"I just take it one day at a time," Wilson said. "I tell myself I have to go as hard as I can today; do rehab the hardest I can, and then I let tomorrow and the future take care of itself."
