DE Lawrence Wilson (official thread)

Someone else brought it up before, but I'll say it again.

Would it really matter if we redshirt him or not? Does anyone think he'll want to stick around for a redshirt senior season? I'm not saying he doesn't want to be at Ohio State, but I think if he plays up to expectations after he comes back and next season, he'll be more than ready to pursue his professional career.

Edit: With this in mind, I think we'll likely try to get as much out of him as we can(i.e. I think he plays as soon as he's ready to).

Yeah, I've seen that opinion on this thread before, but I guess I have trouble believing that he'll be better than a full-speed Barrow, Rose, or Heyward. That would put him 5th on the list of DE's, so why not give him the bowl game off and cross your fingers that he "pulls a Doss" for his senior year.

Just my opinion. I could be way off. He might be better coming off an injury than all of those guys and we'll benefit from playing him in the bowl game. Tough for me to buy at this point, but that's just my hunch.

I agree with Yertle. What if he comes back for the bowl game and doesn't have his "Money Year" (ala Santonio Holmes) the following season? He wouldn't have a choice to come back to showcase his talent, prove himself to those NFL scouts, and have that Money Year. WE all know how good he is, and he's good enough to be a first day pick. The question is will he be first round. Hell, PITCOCK was two picks away from being a 2nd day pick this year!! You can't take ANYTHING for granted in this day and age, especially in sports.

If it were me, I'd play it safe and give myself that option to come back for a 5th year if everything doesn't go as planned. Then again, I'm not Lawrence Wilson.

could this be considered a medical if he didn't make it back by bowl time? If he played in a bowl game, would it count as a year?
Thanks!

He can apply for the medical red shirt since he got hurt in the first game (1st qtr, IIRC) and thus didn't play in 20% of the games...but since he played in a game, his "normal redshirt" is shot. He's a junior, so next year would be his last year of eligibility if he didn't apply for the medical redshirt. If his rehab goes well and he returns to 100% by next season, he may play well enough then to warrant going into the draft after his senior season and not applying for the redshirt...but it's nice to know the option's there.

Thanks Mili. I was curious more than anything. I wish Lawerence the very best no matter what he chooses. He's got a motor that just won't quit! I loved the part where he stated that his focus is on the other players filling in, helping them hone their skills. What a team player. He's not selfish, just gives and gives and gives. WOW!

Lawrence has to be thanking the football Gods that the holier-than-thou Irish fired Ty Willingham. (Not to mention Ty himself)

While it's up for debate how good they might have been, it's not up for debate how bad they actually are.

He's gotta get a chuckle out of the South Bend situation, if nothing else.

I think Wilson is good to go with one more season, but you just never know. If playing in the bowl game would erase the chance of improving his draft status with the extra year, which it would, he's got a lot of consideration ahead of him. Hopefully it's a moot point.

Still Making an Impact: Defensive end Lawrence Wilson broke his leg early this season and hasn't played a down since, but according to defensive line coach Jim Heacock, Wilson has continued to contribute to the OSU defense.

"He's in every meeting for one thing," said Heacock.

"He sits in our meeting room and helps the defensive ends. He's really into it. He's tremendous.

"I love him on game day. If we could I wish we could take him to away games because he's really good on home games. He helps the young guys. He's got a little more confidence than those young guys when you've got Cameron (Heyward) and Rob Rose, those guys don't have the experience that he's got. I think he settles them down and gets them excited," said Heacock.

Heacock said that Wilson's willingness to stay involved has been critical for his young defensive line. According to Heacock, Wilson was the emotional leader of that unit.

"I think he's kind of the spark plug of our group," said Heacock.

"He was all spring and all fall. He's the talker, the guy who gets them going.

"When he left it got quiet around there, so it's nice to get him back because I've got a lot of quiet guys.

"Nobody says anything. It's a quiet unit. Lawrence makes me feel better because he's at least talking. I know there's some life there," said Heacock with a wry grin.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State can bring only 70 players to Penn State today, and defensive coordinator Jim Heacock would love to add an injured player to that list.
Defensive end Lawrence Wilson is recovering from a broken leg suffered in the opener Sept. 1, but his presence behind the scenes has meant a lot, Heacock said.
"He's in every meeting, for one thing," Heacock said. "He really helps the defensive ends. He's really into it, he's tremendous. I love him on game day; if we could, I wish we could take him to away games because he's really good."

Has anyone heard an update on Wilson? If I remember correctly...it seemed like the wisconsin game was originally the targeted return game. Any news for Illinois? I haven't found anything..

Last I heard he was done for the season. (Although I haven't followed this all that closely since his injury.)

I'm thinking he'll be available for the Bowl game.

Now as to whether or not the coaches decide to play him is another question. Is it worth it to have him in one game if it means he wouldn't be able to be granted the extra medical redshirt year? 1 game for a whole year of eligibility? I don't think we see him back this season. :(

Can't wait to see him come back stronger and hungrier than ever! Go Bucks!

But what if the Bowl Game just happens to fall on Jan 7? That is a tough call. If it were any other day, I'd keep him out of the game.

I highly doubt that even if he was physically ready, he'd be in tip-top playing shape, so I doubt it'd be worth it.
