You have to have played in less than 20% of the games to be eligible for a medical red shirt. Please correct me, anyone, if I am mistaken.

Yes, but it's rounded up, so it can be up to 3 games in a 12-game football season.

edit - and they must all be in the first half of the season.

Lawerence is a good friend of mine.

I just got off the phone with him and he has surgery tomorrow for a broken tibia, and he doesnt think he will be back this season.

please keep him in your prayers!!

a shame...please pass on our best wishes for a speedy recovery. I had a similar injury when I played in college...I missed 2 months...injured in October, but was running again in December/January.

This was the only bad part of my day. Got to see the game at the father-in-laws (only one in the family with Directv), drink some Yukon, watch TSUN choke(which seems to happen every year), and watched Notre Dame get shellacked. Here's to a speedy recovery for Mr. Wilson. Hated to see him carted off the field in pain.

OSU trainers tend to defensive end Lawrence Wilson's broken leg as coach Jim Tressel looks on. An inflatable cast was applied to Wilson's right leg, and he was taken off the field by cart.

Lawrence Wilson was off to a flying start for his junior season yesterday in Ohio Stadium.
The Ohio State defensive end already had a sack when, in an instant, he was on the shelf, likely for the duration of the season.
He suffered a broken tibia, the weight-bearing bone, in his lower right leg after getting caught in a traffic jam in the backfield during the second quarter of the Buckeyes' 38-6 win over Youngstown State. In agony on the field before an inflatable cast was applied to the fracture, he was taken off by cart and spent last night in the Ohio State University Medical Center.

Isn't there also a rule that says that if you're playing in the last few games, you are ineligible for a medical redshirt?

Yes, all of the participation must also be in the first half of the season.

For all those talking about a medical redshirt, he hasn't even taken a "normal" redshirt. Both options are open.....
With him playing 2 quarters this year, a normal redshirt is not an option. He'd be applying for a medical redshirt if he was to miss the rest of the year with this injury, and he would definetly get it if he does.

Ohio State football: Wilson has surgery

Ohio State defensive end Lawrence Wilson had surgery this morning on the broken right tibia, or shin bone, he suffered during the Buckeyes' 38-6 win over Youngstown State on Saturday.

His father, Eugene Wilson, said doctors estimated that his son will be sidelined for six to eight weeks. According to Wilson, the prognosis is good because the break was clean and only one bone was involved.

"If it's good, it's six, if it lingers, it's eight," Wilson said. "We're hoping by Wisconsin."

A return to action for the Badgers on Nov. 3 would be nine weeks from the date of the injury.

Eugene Wilson said his wife, Sarah, will relocate to Columbus for the next several weeks to aid her son's recovery.

"He's feeling good mentally," Wilson said. "It happened early, in the first game, so under the circumstances, it's probably a best-case scenario."

I love Lawrence Wilson as a player and a person and feel awful about what happened. I was sooooo excited for his season after he showed off his ability when he ran down that QB for a sack!! I thought it was Thaddeus Gibson at first, but when he got up and I saw it was #87 I was so amazed!! Here's to hoping for a speedy recovery that he doesn't try to rush it back, but let it heal fully and correctly. This does open some PT up for Cam Heyward and probably a starting spot for Robert Rose. We should be able to get them some quality time and it should be a great learning experience for the both of them.
