Ohio State football: Freshman starting on Ohio State D-line a rarity for Meyer

Defensive end Joey Bosa comes from a family of NFL linemen.
Coach Urban Meyer clarified a point yesterday about Ohio State freshman Joey Bosa and the playing time he has received since replacing banged-up defensive end Adolphus Washington four games ago.
“Joey Bosa is not a ‘throw in there,’ he’s a starter,” Meyer said during his radio call-in show on WBNS-FM. “Joey Bosa is the starter right now. He’s a starting defensive lineman as a true freshman at Ohio State, which is quite a mouthful.”
In his 12th year as a head coach, Meyer thinks Bosa is the first to achieve that status.
“He’s an impact player, and I’ve never really had a freshman D lineman” do that, Meyer said earlier in the week as the unbeaten Buckeyes headed toward a bye on Saturday. “Usually a cornerback, receiver, running back can step in and play, but his future is kind of silly around here if he keeps going.
“He’s just so strong, he torques people,” Meyer said, citing Bosa’s ability to bench-press 225 pounds 30 times. “Some guys are real strong, but they don’t use it. But he is a long-levered guy, and you can tell.”
Meyer is hardly surprised by Bosa’s football prowess. His father, John, was a star defensive lineman at Boston College in the 1980s and was taken in the first round of the 1987 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins. His uncle, Eric Kumerow, played defensive end at Ohio State in the 1980s and was taken in the first round of the ’88 draft by Miami.
The pro careers of John Bosa and Kumerow were cut short by injuries, but it’s the pedigree that Joey Bosa inherited.
“It’s a big football family,” Meyer said. “And you can tell football has been in his world his entire life.”
Yet Bosa said he knows his place, even after his two-sack game on Saturday at Northwestern, which he capped by recovering a wayward lateral in the end zone on the last play for a touchdown.
“The fact is that I am a freshman, and everyone knows I’m a freshman, so I am still getting picked on a little bit,” Bosa said.

I'm thinking that the groin injury for Washington is being problematic.
Still, I don't see a beat being missed with Bosa in the game. Impact freshman.

If players like Noah Spence can increase his weight to 250ish lbs with one year of strength training, I'm scared to see what would happen with Bosa. Could he actually exceed John Simon in terms of being a workout warrior?
