Richardson says Sapp took him under his wing before retiring

Jay Richardson said his rookie year in the NFL at defensive end for the Oakland Raiders was an eye-opening experience.

The fifth-round pick in the 2007 Draft out of Ohio State was matched up against offensive linemen who have been through the wars and know the tricks of the trade.

?These guys are very smart,? Richardson said Wednesday at the team?s training camp complex at Redwood Middle School. ?You?d be surprised at how smart some of these players are. It?s not all about ability and scheme. A lot of it is about intelligence.

?Going against the older veteran who knows what he?s doing, you have to be able to play a chess match with him out there ? almost try to out-think him.?
To Richardson?s credit, he caught on pretty fast, playing in all 16 games and starting 11 of those. He learned about run stopping and defensive line play from Warren Sapp, a former Raiders player who retired after last year?s season.

?He taught me more than just football, but being able to take care of yourself and being able to learn what you?re trying to do here and see the bigger picture,? said Richardson, who recorded 33 tackles with a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery.

?After training camp and after the preseason, I had performed pretty decently, so they gave me a shot. I just got a chance to really help the team out, show what I can do and show what I bring to the table. I think I found my niche in this defense. Last year it was as a run stopper because that?s what we needed help with. That?s kind of what I did best last year. And this year I?m trying to do both, and be out there for the pass rush, too.?

Richardson unable to claim full-time spot at defensive end
By Dan Parr
Sept. 5, 2008

Sources in Oakland say the Raiders were hoping that second-year DE Jay Richardson would prove he could handle a full-time starter?s load, but thus far, he hasn?t shown he?s prepared for it. Instead, the team is likely to use Richardson on first and second downs and bring in Kalimba Edwards as a pass-rush specialist in 3rd-and-long situations.

Richardson had just one sack as a rookie last season and didn?t have a single sack in three preseason starts in August. He has been very strong against the run, but hasn?t made enough of an impact on passing downs. The Raiders are counting on Edwards to be a playmaker off the edge, but he has been far from reliable in past seasons. The seventh-year player has been slowed by a groin injury recently and if it gets worse, Richardson could be thrust into the full-time role, even if he?s not ready for it.

THE PEOPLE. Jay Richardson: Mother Knows Best

Former Buckeye and his mother talk about life growing up, playing football and the importance of character

~ by Leah Abouahmed, OhioStateBuckeyes.com

Former Buckeye and Columbus native Jay Richardson is now the starting defensive end for the Oakland Raiders. Living in California is just another place on a long list of areas Richardson has called home. He was born in Washington D.C., lived on Guam for two years, resided in Virginia for three years and settled in Columbus where he played football and basketball for Dublin Scioto High School.

Although Richardson has experienced a change of scenery five times in his 25 years, one thing that has remained a strong and steady constant in his life is his mother's love.

Deborah Johnson was born in Cleveland and grew up a Buckeye fan. She attended Ohio State, where she played rugby and graduated in 1979. It was her influence that helped Richardson decide to continue his football career at Ohio State.

Early on, the two formed a strong bond while Johnson was working as a presidential intern in the nation?s capital. Richardson was only 2-years-old when Johnson relocated to Guam. There, she would bring her toddler with her to the office and the base.

"We're very close," Johnson said. "I always respect the mother-child relationship so I?m not going to say he was my buddy, but we were so close. Jay and I did so much together. When I had company dinners, Jay went with us in his little suit."

Depth chart update-Raiders have alot of bodies competing with Jay.

Right defensive end. Derrick Burgess handles all the left-side stuff, assuming he's healthy and here.

That's created a free-for-all on the right side, where Jay Richardson will get another chance to start against the run with Trevor Scott playing the pass.

Third-round draft pick Matt Shaughnessy is getting lots of right-side reps. So is late-round pick Stryker Sulak. And don't forget Greyson Gunheim.

Jay just got some tougher competition...

Raiders sign former Cowboys defensive end Greg Ellis

He is expected to compete for playing time with third-year end Jay Richardson, second-year end Trevor Scott and rookie Matt Shaughnessy.

Ellis ostensibly will replace veteran Kalimba Edwards, who tied with Scott for the team lead in sacks last season but was released in February. Edwards was a situational pass-rusher for the most part.

Ellis could play opposite Derrick Burgess, but his presence also might allow the Raiders to part ways with Burgess if they can find a team willing to provide adequate compensation.

Precamp breakdown: DL

Projected RDE starter: Greg Ellis.

Now, this isn't exactly set in stone. He practiced with the team for one week before OTAs broke. If he doesn't catch on in camp, he could get cut no matter what the Raiders paid him.

Still, he's the closest thing to a balanced everydown player the Raiders have at this position. But then, if he was an everydown player still, would the Cowboys have phased him out last year and cut him?

Jay Richardson has started on run downs in the past but will be fighting for his job now. Trevor Scott shined as a passing-down specialist but is not geared to stop the run.

If any of these guys learn how to defend the run, the defensive end-by-committee will go away.

Camp analysis: Defensive line

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Sixth in a series analyzing Raiders position groups with players scheduled to report to training camp Tuesday:

Projected starters: DE Greg Ellis, DT Gerard Warren, DT Tommy Kelly, DE Jay Richardson. Backups: DE Derrick Burgess, DE Trevor Scott, DT Terdell Sands, DT Ryan Boschetti, DT William Joseph, DE Matt Shaughnessy, DE Greyson Gunheim, DE Derrick Gray, DE-DT Desmond Bryant.

When Greg Ellis was cut by Dallas and was inserted immediately into the Raiders starting lineup, it was either to send a message or an acknowledgment that a 35-year-old veteran headed toward the downside of his career was immediately superior to what was already on hand. Probably a little of both. The issue across the board among the returning players has been one of consistency in terms of a pass rush, and in getting pushed around against the run. Of the newcomers, Ellis? found his snaps were limited against run-heavy teams such as the New York Giants _ not a good omen. Boschetti barely played for Washington, although Tom Cable considers him an excellent run defenders. The Raiders are giving Kelly a mulligan based on his knee surgery (although it makes you wonder about the wisdom of sinking $18.125 million guaranteed into a player who needs a mulligan). It?s now or never for Sands, who dropped some weight in hopes of achieving some of the promise he had after a strong 2006 season. Scott had five sacks and appears to be gradually building himself into an end who can do more than just rush the passer. The hope with Burgess is that he explodes in a salary drive year. Gunheim?s season-ending performance in Tampa Bay should give him a chance to stick.

The key battle: Shaughnessy vs. Richardson. A defensive end who can hold his edge, stand his ground against the run and allow a swift linebacking crew to come in and clean up would be huge. Richardson looks the part, but hasn?t produced. The Raiders would love to see Shaughnessy be that player.

Trevor Scott vs. Jay Richardson: Two years ago Trevor Scott was playing tight end for the University of Buffalo and now he has a chance to compete for a starting position on the defensive line. Scott who came on strong last season displaying great speed and ability to get to the quarterback has taken this opportunity very seriously. He has bulked up and dedicated himself through study and learning technique to improve his game and in particular has made a concerted effort to improve his play against the run to be able to be an every down defensive end. On the other hand, Richardson, the incumbent, despite his perfect size for the position has displayed none of those characteristics that Scott is possessing. Hopefully this competition will motivate Richardson and upgrade his play, otherwise Richardson may find that he won't even make the team as rookie Matt Shaughnessy mat well surpass him.
