Former Raiders DE Takes Special Pleasure In Sacking Philip Rivers

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is a wanted man. Former Oakland Raiders defensive end Jay Richardson wants to hit him and will take joy in doing so.

Why?

Rivers is a talker on the field, which rubs Richardson the wrong way.

The Ohio State product talked about his feelings toward Rivers on his debut broadcast of The JRich Report on the EYES Radio Network and FootballNewsNow.com. He was candid in openly discussing his desire to take down the Bolts leader during a segment with Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle where we made our predictions on how the AFC West will shake out this season.

?I?m not a big Philip Rivers fan, because I think he?s kind of a cocky dude and I?ve had a chance to sack him before and hit him as hard as I can. I?ll do so again if I get another opportunity,? Richardson told Tafur and myself. ?But, nothing personal against Philip Rivers. I think he?s still a heck of a quarterback.?

Raiders and Seahawks DE Jay Richardson Among Best Unsigned Free Agents

The Detroit Lions are looking to add to their defensive line.

Former Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Jay Richardson is scheduled to workout for the Lions on Sunday.

Richardson is one of the better free agents remaining on the market.

Teams who have not yet expanded their roster to 90 players will certainly give the former Ohio State Buckeye a look.

A knee injury derailed Richardson?s plans for a strong contract season with the Raiders in 2010. He was placed on injured reserve, but was released with an injury settlement and eventually wound up contributing with the Seahawks.

He will excel in a 4-3 defense, but has been able to convert in a 3-4.

There was a small push in the Seattle media for the Seahawks to re-sign Richardson who served primarily in a backup role last

The JRich Report with Jay Richardson and Chuck Carroll on August 26 talked a variety of NFL topics including the Oakland Raiders and Terrelle Pryor.

As a point of disclosure, the show was taped literally just a few hours before Pryor signed with the team.

Jay and Chuck spent the duration of the segment talking about what the delay in his signing could have been.

The pair also broke down the Tim Tebow situation with the Denver Broncos. Both were amazed the quarterback fell from projected starter to potentially fourth string in the span of a month.

Free agent defensive end Jay Richardson and Chuck Carroll were back with another installment of the JRich Report for NFL Week 2 on Football News Now and the EYES Radio Network.

Segment One

The first segment was dominated by talk of Ohio State and the UFL. Former Buckeye running back Maurice Clarett is trying to recruit Richardson to join the UFL with him . . . sort of. Jay would certainly be open to it.

Jets Sign DE Jay Richardson, Former Raiders Starter
By Chuck Carroll
? April 16, 2012
The New York Jets signed veteran defensive end Jay Richardson on Monday.

NEW YORK (FNN Media) ? After a year out of the game, defensive end Jay Richardson signed with the New York Jets on Monday.

Richardson wasn?t one of the more talked about names this year, but has the credentials to serve as a formidable addition to Rex Ryan?s defensive line this season.

Like Andre Carter (free agent formerly of the New England Patriots), the 28-year-old Jay Richardson knows what it?s like to have a season cut short due to injury. During the 2010 preseason, Richardson suffered a torn ligament in his knee and was subsequently placed on injured reserve.

Once healthy, he reached an injury settlement with the Oakland Raiders and began playing the waiting game. A few weeks later he was offered a two-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, but opted instead to sign for just the remaining of the season.

Despite the threat of lockout on the horizon, Richardson and agent Joel Segal wanted to test the free agency waters. Things didn?t go as they hoped and Richardson spent last season out of football. He wasn?t alone.

The free agency period was an ultra-condensed, all-out blitz that largely favored just the bigger names on the market.

Players such as Richardson, who had served primarily in a backup capacity in the previous two seasons, were forgotten. But he doesn?t have any regrets when it comes to his decision.

?There was logic behind that deal,? Richardson told me. ?If they didn?t want to bring me back they could have cut me like a lot of other guys.?

Which brings us current. When I caught up with the former Ohio State Buckeye, he boasted spending last season out of football was a blessing. He hasn?t felt healthier the knee has long since made a complete recovery.

Richardson isn?t naive when it comes to the odds of a successful return. But, he?s also not the type to shy away from adversity.

?I can?t wait to prove them wrong,? he said. ?The deck is stacked against you when you?re out of it a year. You?re name isn?t as relevant. You?re trying to remind people you?re a good player? all you want is an opportunity.?

DE Jay Richardson Accentuates the Positive
Posted by Randy Lange on June 6, 2012

There are those NFL players who we might have some concerns about regarding their transition to life after football.

Jay Richardson is not one of them.

For one thing, he has just a great attitude about things. Take, for instance, his position as a street free agent defensive end signed by the Jets before April?s draft.

?I?m feeling great,? Richardson told me last week with the boundless energy of a genuinely positive person. ?This is a wonderful team and organization. I was in Oakland for 3? years and Oakland is a little different world. The Jets are a good team that has made the playoffs. They took the year off last year but they?re a great team with great character. People talked about a ?circus atmosphere? here but I haven?t seen that. It?s great here, a great group of guys.?

Jay knows a few of those guys better than others. He was on some strong Ohio State teams of the mid-2000s that also featured Buckeyes teammates Nick Mangold at center and Santonio Holmes at wideout.

Richardson also knows about having to take a year off. He did that in 2011. After those 3? seasons in silver and black (during which he started 22 games and produced 81 tackles and seven sacks) and a half-season with Seattle, he became a free agent after the lockout was ended and couldn?t find another team at the time that wanted his services.

?Nobody called, but I kept busy,? he said. ?I did a little world traveling, going to Switzerland and Italy. And I started my own insurance brokerage.?

He called it JR & Associates, and if you need an auto or homeowner?s quote or just want to see how smartly he?s set up his company online, you can click here.

Richardson also stayed in pro shape because, as he said, ?I?d like to think I had decent production and I wasn?t done playing. I was happy to get the call from the Jets. My body feels amazing after the year off. I?m excited. And I love Coach [Karl] Dunbar. He?s a big 4-3 guy.?

Richardson hopes to broker future with Jets
KRISTIAN DYER
NEW YORK
Published: June 13, 2012

The Jets knew that they were getting a five-technique defensive end when they brought Jay Richardson into the team?s offseason activities and minicamp, what they didn?t know was that they got an insurance broker as part of the deal.

Cut by the Seahawks after the 2010 season, Richardson had all but given up his dreams and ambitions of playing in the NFL and had moved back to Columbus, Ohio to focus on his insurance company. In 2007, Richardson, along with partners Roy Johnson and Sean Morrow, went from commodities trading to a focus on insurance ?where we saw the potential to make real money.? They created JR and Associates to become insurance brokers.

?I wasn?t playing football and I figured that was it, I?m done. So after taking a few weeks to mentally understand that ? and it wasn?t easy ? I had my license in Ohio and set about with the business,? Richardson told Metro New York. ?I wasn?t expecting the call I got from the Jets in April. It was exciting.?

The day-to-day operations of the business can be difficult to keep up with while being involved in minicamp, so Richardson has to rely on his business partners to keep him briefed and updated on the important issues of the day. As he sat outside his locker following Wednesday?s morning session of minicamp, Richardson was scrolling through his smart phone. He claims ?eight missed calls? and at least 10 emails waiting for his reply. They range from minutiae to business development.

An entrepreneur has to be good at multi-tasking, but rarely do they have to squeeze conference calls between weightlifting sessions and defensive meetings with coordinator Mike Pettine.

?I?m here at the facility from say 7:30 in the morning till maybe 5 in the night, so that is more than a nine-hour day. We get an hour long break so I can respond to some emails and things for a half-hour of that time; maybe that long,? Richardson said. ?I get back to the hotel and I open up the laptop and can work for a couple more hours there and after that, put in an hour or two of studying the playbook.?

?That?s long days.?

Richardson: ?Oh, Boy, Here We Go?

Thomas is the longest-tenured Jet, beginning his 11th season. Richardson, on the other hand, is tied for being the shortest-tenured Jet with no in-season games in green and white under his belt, just Friday?s ?doesn?t-count? game. But JR?s thoughts went back to his first Sunday at SUNY Cortland training camp.

?Honestly, there were more butterflies and nerves for my first full-pads practice after being out for a year and a half,? said the DE, who missed the first half of 2010 due to a knee injury that closed the Raiders portion of his career, then sat out 2011 after the Seahawks released him. ?That first time back on the field with pads on, suddenly I was like, ?Oh, boy, here we go. I haven?t hit anybody in a while.? Just strapping it up, it was like ?Wow!? It?s been a while since I put this on.?

Thomas definitely is still on the radar. Richardson was flying under it this camp ? until he entered the game late in the second quarter, put on a blind-side rush and separated Bengals backup Bruce Gradkowski from the ball.

?My first play out there, I get a sack and cause a fumble. I?ll take it. It?s a blessing,? he said. ?But I felt good. I?m starting to get more comfortable in this defense, starting to find a role, find my niche here. I think I can bring some pass-rush ability to the table and just run around out there trying to make plays.?

The game can be too short for some of the men who play it. Perhaps for BT and JR, it will allow them to continue their careers and they?ll make some key contributions to the Jets? defensive effort this season.

DL -- In (6): Mike DeVito, Quinton Coples, Sione Po'uha, MuhammadWilkerson, Kenrick Ellis, Marcus Dixon, Jay Richardson. Out: Martin Tevaseu, Damon Harrison Analysis: This group has been set from the beginning. Jay Richardson has played very well during the preseason so that could be an interesting final decision. The calf injury to Mike DeVito might also impact what they do with Richardson and he could make the team as a result, although DeVito is expected to be ready for the season opener. Po'uha continues to deal with tightness in his lower back, but Kenrick Ellis has filled in admirably for him and Po'uha should be back for the opener.
