DE Jay Richardson (FOX 28 CFB Analyst)

Raiders Trade DE Derrick Burgess to Patriots
by LiveAdam on Aug 6, 2009

NFL.com is reporting that the Raiders have traded DE Derrick Burgess to the New England Patriots for as of yet undisclosed draft consideration.

The two teams had been discussing a deal for the disgruntled Burgess for most of the offseason. Previous reports of the trade talks indicated that the Raiders were asking for 3rd and 4th round draft picks from the Patriots.

Burgess' departure brings a sigh of relief for other defensive ends on the Raiders roster such as Jay Richardson and rookie Matt Shaughnessy, who will both likely make the 53-man roster now that Burgess is gone.

Matter of timing for Richardson

Second-year player Trevor Scott has received a majority of the reps at right defensive end during training camp.

Raiders Coach Tom Cable said it's one of many starting spots up for grabs. On Thursday, incumbent starter Jay Richardson shed some light on an underlying issue regarding the disparity in reps between him and Scott.

Richardson sustained a left-knee injury during off-season workouts and sat out the bulk of the sessions. Cable called it "nothing major" at the time. As it turned out, it was serious enough for Richardson to undergo surgery in June.

Richardson said he is "87-90 percent" healthy these days.

"I'm just slowly getting my footwork back," Richardson said. "I missed all (organized team activities), so it takes a little bit to get the footwork back and some of the timing and stuff."

Greg Ellis made fans forget Derrick Burgess in exactly one play. Facing his old team, Ellis batted down a Tony Romo pass on the first play of the game -- in the face of a double team, no less.

Trevor Scott was much less effective on the other end, getting shoved far out repeatedly as he tried to turn the left corner. With a pass deflection and tackle for a 9-yard loss, Jay Richardson might win some snaps back yet.

Breaking down the Seymour deal
Defensive lineman Richard Seymour made the Raiders' run defense better the moment they finalized the trade with the Patriots on Sunday morning.

Anyone who doubts that should watch film of Trevor Scott and Jay Richardson against the run, or of defensive tackles Gerard Warren and Tommy Kelly on extended drives.

We'll assume Seymour is going to report for duty -- as of after practice Sunday, he had yet to be in contact with the Raiders. How exactly does Seymour make them better, five Pro Bowls and three Super Bowl rings aside?

** He'll start at right defensive end, according to Raiders coach Tom Cable, making him possibly the largest 4-3 end in the NFL (6-6, 310 pounds) since Tommy Kelly started there in 2007. Experience says he will hold the edge better than anyone has here in years.

This allows second-year end Trevor Scott to return to the role he's best at: a third-down pass rush specialist who has full use of his high motor after periods of rest.

The Raiders tried Scott as an every-down end, giving him the job (poorly) held by Jay Richardson last year. Scott simply did not hold up. He could not hold the edge against the run, getting his undersized body shoved around. By the time passing downs rolled around, he was too gassed to speed-rush around the left tackle.

With Seymour and Scott at right end, rookie Matt Shaughnessy and Richardson must fight for snaps behind veteran Greg Ellis on the left side.

Defensive end Jay Richardson reeling in former Chiefs nemesis Larry Johnson from behind for a 3-yard loss in the second quarter.

Richardson took over running downs when Pro Bowler Richard Seymour left the game after one series with a lower back strain and didn't return. Relegated to occasional playing time, Richardson responded with six tackles -- including one for a 4-yard loss on an end around.

SBREPORT: Interview with Raiders DE Jay Richardson ? Part 1
April 27th, 2010

Jay_Richardson-300x216.jpg

Oakland Raiders defensive end Jay Richardson has been a solid contributor to the squad since his arrival in 2007.

The former Ohio State Buckeye is not only a hard worker on the field, but a charismatic provider off the field with his charitable ways and work with various foundations. SBReport.net was able to talk to the classy athlete and get recollections of his childhood, insight on his time as a Raider, on goings in the Bay Area and other topics in this exclusive two-part interview.

Richardson?s mother, Deborah Johnson, was born in Cleveland and was a Buckeye fan growing up. She attended Ohio State and eventually became a presidential intern in Washington, which gave Jay a diverse upbringing.

SBREPORT: You lived in many places as a youth. How did that influence your childhood years?

JAY RICHARDSON: ?You know what, at the time, it didn?t seem as stressful as I guess it could looking back at it now. It was actually all I knew at that time. It was really a good time because I got to see a lot. Live in different parts of the world: Korea, Japan and Tokyo, lived in Guam for a few years and we were on base in Virginia. Bouncing around a lot, I guess it was hard because you never had a consistent group of friends and I was always going from place-to-place. But at the time, I didn?t look at it like that. I was just having fun, so it was good.?

SBREPORT: What about going to Ohio State; where your mother went and becoming a Buckeye?

RICHARDSON: ?I really didn?t have much of a choice. When I came out of high school, that?s where I was going to go. In the back of my head, I pretty much knew I was going to go to Ohio State.?

Oakland used their 5th round pick (138th overall) in 2007 to bring in the Dublin, Ohio native. When asked about his recollections of that day, Richardson responded: ?You know, the draft for me was like up in the air. I was one of those players; you know it was hard to predict where I would fall. Some people had me going as early, late in the 2nd round. Some people had me going un-drafted. So it was like, no one really knew and I had talked to some teams as the draft began; Jacksonville called me at the end of the first round saying they were going to get me, trying to get me early in the third, and I had spoken with Miami. It was funny because, I hadn?t even really watched the draft on T.V. I went to church Sunday morning, went to eat with the family, went home was changing clothes then I got a phone call. I got the phone call from the front office in Oakland and I remember thinking to myself, when I got the call, ?the Oakland Raiders, who is this?.? And it was the young lady on the front desk said, ?I have the head coach on the phone, he has something he wants to say to you?,,? and I was like, ?Ok?.? And he was like, yeah, we just drafted you.?

SBREPORT: Interview with Raiders DE Jay Richardson ? Part 2
April 28th, 2010 Victor Cotto

In this second installment of SBReport?s exclusive interview with Oakland Raiders defensive end Jay Richardson, the 26-year old talks about his head coach coming back for one more campaign, the off-season and the Silver & Black?s fan-base among many other topics.

SBREPORT: You?ve been around a lot of solid veteran defensive linemen since you arrived: Warren Sapp, Derrick Burges, Greg Spires, Kalimba Edwards, Greg Ellis?what have you learned from those guys?

JAY RICHARDSON: ?That?s a good point you make, I?ve had the privilege to be around a lot of good defensive ends, just good leaders, good players and all very different. All guys you can learn from. When it comes to leadership, Greg Ellis was just one of those guys that is going to take charge, he?s just a perfect model for what a pro is supposed to be. But when I first go there, Derrick Burgess was here, and he was kind of like the man at the time, and who you wanted to look at, to see how to do things and the way he rushed the quarterback?he was just a real special athlete. I had the privilege of watching him rush every day, just trying to take what I could, such a tough player, just started to rub off on me. Obviously, we have [Richard] Seymour now, and he?s like a champion. A guy who has three rings, he?s been to the big show and I think it just helps a lot. It valuable to have someone like that on your team.?

Raiders? Richardson looking to prove he?s worthy of greater
Posted July 16, 2010
By Dan Parr

With training camp just a couple weeks away, Raiders DE Jay Richardson is out to prove he's not a one-dimensional player. He has built a reputation as a run stopper in the first three seasons of his career, and made only three sacks in each of the past two seasons. He was almost always off the field in third-down situations in 2009.

Richardson recently spoke with PFW over the phone from Miami, where he has been training.

"(Coaches) were like 'On running downs we want Jay out there because he can definitely do a good job stopping the run,'" Richardson said. "And that was cool. Don't get me wrong. But as you grow in this league, as you learn, as you progress and get better at what you do and really study the position and your craft, you want to be the total package. Every defensive end wants to be a complete defensive end."

Richardson, who started 22 games from 2007-08, moved to a backup role behind Richard Seymour and Greg Ellis last season. Ellis was released in the offseason, leaving Richardson to compete against Seymour, second-year veteran Matt Shaughnessy and rookie Lamarr Houston for reps in the rotation at end. He wants to start, of course, but there's a good chance he'll be a backup once again.

"(The Raiders) always find (a spot) for me," he said. "? If I was worried about competition, I shouldn't be playing pro football."

Raiders defensive end Jay Richardson is making good on a promise to give back to the community as a way of showing his appreciation for the help he received as a youngster. He formed the Jay Richardson Foundation, which recently conducted its first life skills camp. The foundation targets underprivileged youth, mostly in inner-city areas, Richardson said.
