Jay Richardson underwent knee surgery Tuesday and could miss the rest of preseason.

Oakland Raiders defensive end Jay Richardson had surgery on his left knee Tuesday to repair damage suffered in a Aug. 7 injury during a live-tackling drill.

The 26-year-old Ohio State product will likely miss the remainder of camp according to Steve Corkran of the Oakland Tribune.

Richardson was upbeat following the procedure and managed to update his followers on Twitter while recovering.

?I jus wanna thank the Lord, my family, and all my tweet peep and Raider soldiers out there for all the prayer n support,? he wrote. ?Surgery went great!?

Richardson will begin rehabbing the knee soon, but no exact timetable has been given for his return.

The fourth-year defensive lineman is entering a contract season and told us prior to the season that he hoped to establish himself among the elite ends in the league. Now, he?ll have to do so without the luxury of four warm-up games in the pre-season.

Jay Richardson will miss two to three weeks following knee surgery.

Oakland Raiders will be without the services of defensive end Jay Richardson for the next two to three weeks according to head coach Tom Cable.

The 26-year-old Ohio State product had his knee scoped Tuesday, ending his preseason campaign. He will begin rehabbing the knee soon.

The injury has to be frustrating for Richardson who is entering the final year of his four-year rookie contract.

Before the start of the season Richardson stated that he was out to prove he was among the elite defensive ends in the league. Unfortunately he?ll have to start his quest in the regular season.

Cutting Richardson Was a Difficult Decision for Oakland Raiders
By Chuck Carroll
Football News Now Staff Writer
September 4, 2010

Tom Cable said cutting Jay Richardson was among his tougher decisions.

When the Oakland Raiders trimmed their roster to 53 players Saturday afternoon, they did so at the expense of defensive end Jay Richardson.

Once a starter for the team, the fourth-year player got bumped down the depth chart due to veteran acquisitions over the last few seasons. He missed the vast majority of training camp this season after having his left knee scoped.

?I think in some ways yes,? head coach Tom Cable said when asked whether cutting Richardson was among the tougher decision he had to make. ?As I said all along I thought there were four or five decisions there that were tough and here we are we still have one more. Yes, there are some tough decisions there.?

The release has to be an especially difficult pill to swallow for Richardson who was entering a contract year. After training hard in the offseason, the former Ohio State Buckeye told us that he thought he could wind up a starter at left defensive end.

?The instances that I did play [in 2010] I thought I played pretty well,? Richardson said at the time. ?I think I?ve got as good of a chance as anybody to get that left end job coming into 2010.?

Injury settlement with Richardson, Daniels
Written by Patrick A. Patterson
Wednesday, 15 September 2010

Tuesday was an off day for the Raiders. However, they announced that they reached injury settlements with defensive ends Jay Richardson and Alex Daniels.

Alex Daniels was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Cincinnati. He made headlines when he was moved to fullback. He spent a couple of weeks at the fullback position, seeing action in second and third games at fullback before moving back to the defensive side of the ball.

Jay Richardson was a sixth round pick in 2007. His play had the Raiders release third round pick Quentin Moses. He started 22 games in his first two years, but never became the all around player the Raiders were hoping for. He had 82 tackles and 7 sacks with a safety in his three years as a Raider.

This move makes both of them free agents.

Richardson Reaches Injury Settlement with Raiders, Changes Agents

Richardson and the Raiders reached an injury settlement, making him a free agent

The Oakland Raiders and Jay Richardson quietly reached an injury settlement this week making the defensive end an unrestricted free agent.

Richardson suffered a small medial tear in his meniscus that required surgery during training camp. He was placed on waivers and ultimately wound up being placed injured reserve, which caught him off guard.

?A little bit. I definitely was,? Richardson said when I asked if the Raiders? decision surprised him. ?Even some of the coaches were surprised it happened, too. And some of my teammates were surprised it happened.?

The former Ohio State Buckeye also said that he understood the situation given that the team is carrying fewer defensive ends this season.

Richardson may not have to wait long before stepping on to the football field. He received medical clearance from his doctor to resume playing Friday morning and has already received interest from a number of NFL teams.

?Nothing I?m at liberty to disclose right now,? he said when asked for specific teams that were interested. ?But yeah, there is definitely some interest and I?d say in the next two to five weeks it?ll probably be pretty obvious.?

Bring The Pain - Jay Richardson
Story: Jason E. Ohlson | Intro: Mary Wolfe

Discipline, hard work and perseverance are trademarks of the Oakland Raiders star defensive end Jay Richardson. In a league where premiere defensive players are hard to find, Raider Nation has embraced Jay Richardson as a playmaker and star. Over his three seasons in the NFL, Richardson has amassed 82 tackles, 27 assists and 7.0 sacks solidifying his role as a reliable contributor and cornerstone in their legendary defensive unit.

Richardson?s collegiate career began at The Ohio State University, where he majored in African-American studies. The Dublin, Ohio, native was drafted in 2007 by the Oakland Raiders in the 5th round (138th overall), and ever since, Jay has been a testament to consistency in the NFL.

Giving back to the community comes as naturally to Jay as does sacking star quarterbacks. In his off-season home of Columbus, Ohio, Jay remains true to his roots and gives annually to his church. He currently has started The Jay Richardson Foundation, which offers a series of interactive workshops for athletes and their parents to address issues of education and athletics.

With such a promising career in full motion ahead of him, Jay Richardson embodies the essence of a true athlete. He knows how to perform at the very top level of the game, but never forgets that family and community provide his foundation.

Within a week of being jobless, I got calls from a number of different teams expressing interest. (photo: Eric Wagner)

So this is the update on my 2010 season so far. It hasn?t exactly gone how I planned it in my head back in February to say the least.

I came into training camp in late July, coming off of my best offseason ever. I was leaner, stronger and quicker than I had ever been. I felt good about my chances of possibly being a starter by the end of camp and having a wonderful year, which was coincidentally also a contract year for me.

I also hired a new agent. I decided to make the switch to an agent I believed could take better care of me and give me a better chance in the possible free agency market next year. This year things were going to be different ? and they have been.

The Injury

After beginning camp strong, having made a good early impression on my new D-line coach and teammates, the unthinkable happened. Halfway through our fourth full-padded practice, I began to feel a sharp pain in my left knee.

The pain felt familiar. In the summer of 2009 I had the same pain and it ended up being a torn meniscus in my left knee which required surgery. Needless to say, I was more than a little concerned.

I decided to be a tough guy and keep on practicing, but by the last period of practice, I just couldn?t do it any longer. The pain and weakness had taken over. So, I went to the trainers and they sent me to have a MRI.

It wasn?t long after that I discovered that I had re-injured the same knee in the exact same spot. I was devastated, but not defeated. I decided to rest it for a few days and see if it got any better. Unfortunately, it did not.

I needed to have surgery? again.

Both Jay and Deborah have made it their mission to use their own success to help fledging athletes and sports moms across the nation. In this candid interview they share why their recipe for success includes family support, a clear plan, and a healthy dose of good manners.

On being the new face of Campbell's Soup
Deborah: It's so exciting to know I'm going to be able to impact so many people. It's been my dream to be the voice of sports parents everywhere. There are 44 million children under the age of 18 who play organized sports. I'm going to use this opportunity to help moms from little league to the big leagues.
Jay: I'm really proud of my mom. I'm happy that she is making her own space and doing her own thing. I'm proud of who she wants to be as an NFL mom and what she's going to do as the spokeswoman for heart health.

?Jaycation? Over ? Back to Work

Moving along?it has been another interesting week or so for me.

Just when I was getting used to being home and enjoying my time off with my friends and family, I get a call from my agent. It?s time to cut my rest short and begin training to get back to work. It?s only Week 8 so there?s still plenty of time to contribute this season, which is good.

My biggest concern is coming back too soon and not playing like I know I can. You never want to put a bad play on film, so I have to make sure I can do my job to the best of my abilities or I?m wasting a team?s time and risking my reputation.

That being said, with the chance that there may not be an NFL next year and my current economic situation, it would be nice to be employed LOL!
So it?s back to the gym for me. Workouts are going well and I?m feeling closer to being my old self again every day. The Lord is healing me on His own time and I?m thankful for my faith, and for all of the support from my family and fans.

Seahawks Sign Former Raider Jay Richardson to One-Year Deal
By
Chuck Carroll
?Football News Now Staff Writer? November 3, 2010

The Seattle Seahawks signed defensive end Jay Richardson to a one-year deal Wednesday.

The former Oakland Raiders starter was among a handful of players to work out for Pete Carroll?s team Monday.

Richardson, an Ohio State product, underwent knee surgery after tearing his meniscus during training camp with the Raiders in August. He was released, re-signed and ultimately placed on IR.

A few weeks later Richardson?s new agent Joel Segal, who currently has his hands full with Randy Moss, was able to reach an injury settlement with the team.

Since entering the free agency market, Richardson received feelers from a number of teams around the league. The Denver Broncos, Houston Texans and New England Patriots all expressed interest in signing the 2007 fifth-round draft pick.

However, a slight injury setback with his knee while training in Miami delayed his return to the playing field. The 26-year-old does not foresee any future setbacks.

Jay Richardson?s ?View From The Sidelines? ? Seahawk And Loving It

Jay Richardson is a defensive lineman playing for the Seattle Seahawks. His blog ? ?View From The Sidelines? ? chronicles his path pack to the NFL after suffering a knee injury and being released by the Oakland Raiders following training camp in 2010.

'It all happened so fast I couldn't really process it. I was on the practice field and in a stance before I could blink.': Richardson on joining the Seattle Seahawks. (photo: Eric Wagner)

Sorry it has been so long since my last update. A lot has changed. As a matter of a fact, I should probably change the name of this cleverly titled journal. The reason being, I am no longer on the sidelines. I am blessed to say that, as of about five weeks ago, I?m back on the field. I could have never planned it this way but I?m very thankful of the outcome. I am now a Seattle Seahawk?(for now). God is good.

So let?s get all caught up, shall we?

How I Landed In Seattle

About seven weeks ago Al Davis called me while I was in Ohio and told me they were eligible to sign me back in a week. He wanted me in Oakland during the week leading up to that so that they could work me out and get me back in some kind of shape other than round.

I was nervous because I knew I wasn?t completely healthy, but excited about the opportunity. I prayed about it and decided to take his offer.

They flew me out on a Sunday and we worked out Saturday morning. I?m still not sure how i made it through that. I hadn?t ran since September (docs orders, I?m not lazy, I promise). Once we were finished, I spoke with some of my old teammates and coaches and then went back to my place and waited.

The time came for them to make a decision and Mr. Davis said because of injuries, they would have to wait another week to sign me.

?No big deal,? I thought since I felt I needed the time anyway. The next week, I didn?t hear anything on Sunday so I took off to Vegas to check on someone close to me who was ill.

The very next day, I get a call from my agent Joel Segal asking me if wanted to workout for Seattle. Apparently they had some injuries along the defensive line and needed help.
