DE Jamel Turner (Butler Community College; transfer to Akron)

Class'13;1676733; said:
Assuming his enrollment works out, and he can come in for spring quarter, does Turner have a shot at taking over Thad's role this early, or will he be more of a project?

Nathan Williams will be the starter at LEO next year, which is where Thad played. Turner isn't a project, but he still might redshirt due to the talent and depth ahead of him.

OSU signee Turner leaves Fork Union

The twisted tale of OSU recruit Jamel Turner has taken yet another turn.

The defensive end from Youngstown, who left Ursuline High School last spring and enrolled in Fork Union Military Academy this year, is no longer a cadet there, a FUMA spokesman confirmed today. The spokesman could not comment on the reason.

So far, attempts to reach Turner have been unsuccessful. An OSU official, though, has confirmed that as of now, his status as a member of the class of 2010 is unchanged.

Without knowing what Turner plans to do, it stands to reason that his scholarship would remain valid, provided he graduates from high school somewhere. He could return to Youngstown, finish up and report to OSU this summer.

Could he go to a High school in Florida to finish his senior year?
One of my friends back in Ohio transferred from Piqua HS to a HS in Florida for his senior year in order to graduate on time... he was short on the number of credits needed and apparently the number in Florida where he went was lower than the one at Piqua. Just adding this in.

OSU football notebook: Recruit shot, source says
Monday, April 19, 2010
By Tim May and Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State football recruit Jamel Turner was believed to have been shot over the weekend in the Youngstown area, a source close to the OSU program said.

Details are sketchy, but Turner's wounds were not thought to be life-threatening. He did not respond to phone messages left for him yesterday.

No official confirmation was available last night.

This is just the latest in a long line of troubles for Turner, a defensive end. He was kicked off the Ursuline High School basketball team for disciplinary reasons in the spring of 2009, his junior year, and declared academically ineligible for sports.

He was spending his senior year at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy and appeared to be doing well. In February, he signed his letter of intent to play for OSU.

At the time, Turner told The Dispatch, "We all make bad decisions and mistakes, but it's what you do after that."

He left Fork Union in March, though, for reasons that were never explained. He returned to Youngstown, where OSU coach Jim Tressel said he assumed Turner was trying to graduate.

Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN

Unidentified assailants opened fire on former Ursuline High School football player Jamel Turner and two others, according to a police report.

Turner, 18, of Orion Avenue, told police he was riding southbound in a vehicle just after 11 p.m. Friday on Interstate 680 near the Williamson exit when a dark car with tinted windows pulled alongside their vehicle and began shooting.

Turner suffered a gunshot wound to the lower left ankle and another to the right hip, and neither was a life-threatening injury, according to a police report.

The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old Ferndale Avenue man, suffered a gunshot wound to the hand.

An 18-year-old Orion Avenue male, who was in the vehicle but wasn’t injured, told police they didn’t recognize the assailants’ car and couldn’t think of anyone who would want to hurt them.

During a search of the victims’ vehicle, two handguns were located along with a bag containing suspected marijuana and another bag with three pills, according to the report.

Police searched the area for evidence of the shooting but found none, according to the report.

Ohio State University football recruit Jamel Turner wounded in shooting | cleveland.com

Jamel Turner, who in February signed a national letter of intent to play football at Ohio State, was riding in the car of a man who served prison time for drug and gun crimes when he was shot on Friday night.

Terry, who said he was driving, was shot in the hand, while Jamel Turner, who said he was in the right rear passenger seat, was shot in the left ankle and right hip. Jamal Turner was not shot.

According to Mahoning County court records, Terry has been arrested several times for drug and gun crimes. In March 2005, he pled guilty to possession of cocaine and carrying a concealed weapon and was sentenced to two years in prison.

UPDATE: Tressel on Turner

OSU coach Jim Tressel texted the Dispatch moments ago, simply saying, "Have not spoken to him," in response to messages about Jamel Turner.

Also, the driver of the car in which Turner was riding, Ramses Terry, has a long history of drug and gun-related convictions, according to Mahoning County court records. Most recently, he served two years in prison for cocaine possession and carrying a concealed weapon.

Tressel will certainly be asked about Turner on Wednesday, when the annual spring-game draft is held.
