DE Jamel Turner (Butler Community College; transfer to Akron)

Scout $ - Turner Takes Buckeye Official Visit

12/22

By The Bank...says he is so happy with how thing have worked out and is planning to be at OSU in June...talks about his official to OSU last weekend where he was hosted by Johnny Simon...says it was a perfect weekend and will continue to motivate him to make sure he is ready to leave Fork Union in May.

I think it's important to note that at the end of the article Jamel thanks the Buckeye community for their support and says he won't let them down...this may be my favorite update on any of the kids in the 2010 class.

I'm really excited for Jamel. Hard work pays off in the end!

I really can't wait to see this kid in S&G. He's gonna be a difference maker off the edge here in a couple of years, possibly sooner! Just keep working hard young man!!

Awesome, I truly hope Jamel can translate his experiences at Fork Union to success at the next level, obviously meaning off the field. On the field, Jamel has always been a 5 star in my book, so no worries there. It is always great to see someone beat the odds and come through like this.

If it wasn't for all of the issues over the summer, there's no doubt Turner would have been wreaking havoc on West QB's yesterday. Let's not forget the only Junior besides Seantrel Henderson to be First Team USA Today All-Americans last year. The amount of talent we have stockpiled on defense just isn't fair.

No question he's going to be a terror after the program gives him the Buckeye mold. Truly has had freakish abilities and I'm really glad things worked out the way they did. I would've loved to see him assist the Irish in their 2nd Consecutive Div. V title but I just don't think you can measure the importance of the mental discipline acquired through Fork Union. That stuff will get you through some difficult challenges.
Agreed. It is almost like red shirting. Being away from home and in a controlled atmosphere for a year will do wonders for this kid. He is growing up fast.

Can't wait to see him on the field.

This guy is Thad part II. Both about the same size coming into college, and both could flat out get to the QB. Doubt he gets as jacked as Thad, but I think he's a good comparison. I really hope he can put on the weight to be a DE/LEO. He's a terror off the edge.

Good comparison for sure but I like Turner's closing speed better from sideline to sideline coming out of high school. Turner's athleticism is really elite for a guy his size.

Agreed. It seems as though the LEO position was "created" for a player of Jamel's skill set. It's easy to root for a player who has taken his path of becoming a buckeye.

Ohio State football: Recruit turns his life around away from home
Tuesday, February 2, 2010 3:06 AM
By Ken Gordon

...
"Sometimes in life, you have obstacles," Turner said. "We all make bad decisions and make mistakes, but it's what you do after that."
...
"There were a couple incidents -- nothing criminal, but when things didn't go his way, he would react very emotionally and just go off," Gunther said. "At the time, Jamel was living with me, he was basically like a son to me. And I told him, 'I'm going to treat you as if you were my own son,' and I kicked him off the team. The biggest reason I did it was Jamel was a big-time football player who probably thought he was bigger than life. I wanted to wake him up." Said Turner: "That hurt a lot, but he did what he had to do."
...
But the structure, and being away from his former environment, did Turner a lot of good. Bright and articulate, he found his grades improving quickly once he actually did the work. "Straight B's," he said, "and hoping to get some A's." Sullivan said, "The kid is very smart, a great leader and loyal to a fault. We won't know until five years or farther down the road if all this stuff worked, but I think it's helped."

Back home, Gunther bursts with pride. "He's going to be able to write a book someday," Gunther said. "The kid is doing phenomenal, and he's got a great story to tell."

Suddenly, many of the dozens of schools that had once recruited Turner started getting back in touch. But just as Ohio State never pulled its scholarship offer when he got into trouble, Turner would not be swayed from his original choice. "(Coach Jim) Tressel is a good man, and he stands by his word," Turner said. "So I'm going to stand by my word, and we're going to get it done."
