DE Jamel Turner (Butler Community College; transfer to Akron)

Ursuline DL Turner still with Ohio St.

But at least one Web site said the All-Ohioan is close to losing his scholarship.
Vindicator staff report

YOUNGSTOWN ? Contrary to some reports, Ursuline junior Jamel Turner has not lost his scholarship to Ohio State, sources said Monday.

?His status with Ohio State is the same that it was,? said a source close to the situation.

Turner, an All-Ohio defensive lineman/linebacker, committed to Ohio State in December.

Since then, Turner has had some issues with school attendance and was kicked off the basketball team at midseason. After placing second in the 110-meter hurdles at last year?s state track meet, Turner did not compete in track this spring.

He is still enrolled at Ursuline and attended classes on Monday. Sources admitted there is concern at Ursuline about his behavior, particularly in recent months.

?There are a lot of rumors going around and the vast majority of them are untrue,? said one source.

Duane Long, who covers Ohio State recruiting for the Duane Long Report, reported Sunday that it is unlikely Turner will end up in a Buckeye uniform.

?He has so much work to do in the classroom as well as some other off-field issues so daunting that he may never play college football,? Long wrote.

Turner (6-foot-3, 215 pounds), a two-time All-Ohioan, has 411??2 sacks over the past two years, helping the Irish to back-to-back Division V state title games, including a title in December.

it's cool that Turner allegedly still has his Buckeye offer according to this story...I don't understand why the 'source' for the story felt the need to be unnamed, though. This isn't the leaking of classified documents from the Pentagon...its a comment about a recruit. Big whoop. Takes away from credibility IMO.

Basically...I remain unconvinced.

Agreed. Ultimately, the coaches know. Now if a coach was the 'source' (highly unlikely), it would be like leaking classified documents from the Pentagon, at least in the NCAA's eyes. Coaches can't mention recruits by name until they are signed.

a couple weeks ago, in another thread ( I think about JT Turner) there was mention of Jamel going to Valley Forge Military College next year. Is this simply rumor? I haven't heard anything about it elsewhere?

I have heard some rumblings but I have yet to see an actual statement. Either way I just hope the young man avoids trouble and still makes his way to Columbus. Also, can he get a Buckeye Leaf for his thread? He's still a verbal.....

Glad to hear this...first off, I'm glad Jamel is getting the chance to get his life on track. As for the recruiting end, we are stacked at LB. However, I saw it as very important that Jamel be in this class in terms of top Ohio talent coming to OSU. Turner is an amazingly gifted athlete that ranks side by side with Hicks as a borderline 5 star player imo. Here's to hoping Jamel can keep his nose clean Valley Forge.

Anyone know if this can be a one year school? I was under the impression it was a two year stepping stone to a 4 year college. I'm unfamiliar with it, will he be able to still be part of the 2010 class, given he gets academics etc. in order? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like he can do just one year.

Valley Forge is one institution with two distinct academic units:

Valley Forge Military Academy is a residential learning environment serving middle school students and high school students (grades 7 through post-graduate).
Valley Forge Military College is a two-year college for students seeking to transfer to a four-year college, university, or service academy.

Valley Forge Military Academy & College Mission Statement

If I remember correctly, Larry Fitzgerald played there one year as a post-grad which was why he was permitted to enter the NFL draft after only two years at Pitt.
