I can't remember why I came to this thread.

DE JACK SAWYER
The Jack position has been a primary point of intrigue surrounding Jim Knowles’ defensive scheme since he was hired to replace Kerry Coombs in December. By the middle of spring, we learned who the top candidate for the hybrid defensive end/linebacker position is. That hasn’t changed just two weeks before the season begins, as sophomore pass rusher Jack Sawyer still seems to be the Buckeye best suited to occupy the position for Knowles and company.

Sawyer has bulked up over the offseason and appears more equipped to handle the physical demands of Big Ten offensive lineman in his second year. Perhaps the ambiguity of his position on the field as a Jack will free Sawyer up to wreak havoc on opposing offenses, which could make him a vital cog for the Buckeye defense this season.

I thought Sawyer had a really solid game against ND. He blew up a few outside runs and just engulfed the offensive players trying to block him.

I’m excited to see more….it felt like there was a lot of focus on our edges which allowed Mike Hall to feast inside. I think as offenses evolve to what we’re doing, JT and Sawyer will feast on QB’s.
100%. He didnt get credited with the tackles but he absolutely blew up NDs plays several times. You want to see a guy set the freaking edge, watch Jack set it 2 yards BEHIND the LOS and force the play back into a place no back wanted to go on Saturday. Michael Hall was allowed to destroy the Irish because, well he's a monster, and because Jack Sawyer and JT dismantled the ends of the line of scrimmage.

Remember the Oregon Ducks running left time after time last season? That shit is over.

Here is an example of Sawyer's support player contribution, without much glory. On Hall's big final sack, it was Sawyer who "stunted" to free up Hall. Hall had a double team, but Sawyer came around to occupy the second blocker, and the first blocker let Hall by thinking the second blocker had him. At least that is what I think I see, though I never played football. Really, the credit goes to Knowles.

I loved that stunt, and it will pay big dividends all year, both when they run it and when Sawyer head-fakes it.

instead of looping around to the gap on the other side of Hall, Sawyer went hard on Hall’s heels and knocked the guard that was engaged with Hall back on HIS heels. The tackle looked to be expecting the guard to hold his ground and that Hall would be cutting outside to make room for Sawyer to go inside. That allowed Hall to cut between the guard and tackle.

He had an excellent game... the thing about Jack is he's all over the place. I saw him line up in every game possible on Saturday. That's insane.

Teams were so focused on him and his movement that they forgot about the other 5 star players and high 4 star talents. He will get is this year but don't be shocked if Jack is a large decoy this year too (faking a power hook for a body blow so to speak).
