DE Chase Young (Nagurski, Hendricks, Bednarik, Silver Football, NFL DROY, New Orleans Saints)

NERVES DID NOT SLOW DOWN OHIO STATE'S CHASE YOUNG IN BREAKOUT GAME AGAINST PENN STATE

It didn’t matter that he entered Ohio State as a five-star prospect, spent last season sitting behind and learning from four NFL defensive ends and has well-regarded defensive line coach Larry Johnson teaching him the trade, Chase Young felt the jitters.

The crowd of 110,889 at Beaver Stadium on Saturday arrived early and made its presence known. Just two weeks prior, the Buckeyes took on TCU in AT&T Stadium in Dallas, but facing Penn State’s top-ranked scoring offense in such a hostile environment presented Young with a challenge he had never before faced.

“I was nervous. I ain't going to lie to you,” Young said. “Big stage. Going out on the field first. The biggest game I've ever played in my life. I was nervous for sure.”

It didn’t take long for him to settle in, though. In a top-10 matchup featuring two of the top offenses in college football, Young ensured no one would forget about his performance on the defensive side of the ball.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound defensive end racked up six tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, two quarterback hurries and a pair of pass break-ups. He was honored as Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week.

After watching Jalyn Holmes, Sam Hubbard, Nick Bosa and Tyquan Lewis earn the majority of snaps last season, Young returned for his sophomore season with visions of Saturday’s performance — but he wants to perform at an even higher level.

He reminded everyone of that on Tuesday, saying his award-winning game was “not close at all” to him reaching his potential.

Football: Chase Young finds himself against Penn State

Chase Young wants the play to go to him. He prays for it.

With Penn State facing a 4th-and-5 at the Ohio State 43-yard line down one point with 82 seconds left in the game, the sophomore defensive end was lined up, ready to jump off the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.

As Nittany Lions redshirt senior quarterback Trace McSorley stepped off, changing the play call, Young touched his chest and pointed to the sky, something he said he does often, though it’s not caught on film.

“I think everything is in God’s plan,” Young said. “I prayed and said ‘God, if this play’s coming to me, help me make it.’ I sent one up and it came to me and I made it.”

As McSorley snapped the ball, Young moved around Ohio State redshirt junior defensive lineman Jashon Cornell, who held off the right tackle, immediately plugging the hole Penn State junior running back Miles Sanders attempted to run through for the first down, securing the victory for the Buckeyes.

This tackle capped off a career day for Young, who recorded three tackles for loss, including two sacks, two quarterback hits and two pass breakups in Ohio State’s 27-26 win over Penn State.

Young was recognized as Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week, given to the defensive end with the best performance in college football that week. Young was the second Ohio State defensive lineman to receive the award this year, with junior defensive end Nick Bosa receiving the award after his performance in the season opener against Oregon State.

After Bosa suffered an injury during the TCU game, and with no clear timetable for return, Ohio State’s defensive line has had to lean on Young to become a dominant pass-rusher — something he has embraced against both Tulane and Penn State.

“Coach [Urban] Meyer, he tries to tell us not to wait, so I think every chance I got to get on the field, I tried to put my best out there,” Young said. “I guess the Penn State game, I just had a real good game. I thank God I had a real good game. It was a national stage, ABC, and I just thank God that the Penn State game was that I had a good one.”

Well, it's easier to be #2, than #1. Without Bosa, Chase gets the attention of the HB. He hasn't developed the chops yet to get past them. Cooper seemed to be invisible as well. And they were running through Landers. Seemed when they put in the big bodies Garrett (?) that the run game got stuffed.

Very true...so many plays are schemed with him in mind now. The lack of a consistent motor is disappointing though.

Where is he?

On the subject of defense: Anyone seen Chase Young lately? After what looked like a breakthrough against Penn State, he’s almost been an afterthought, with only a half sack in the four games since.

Some of this is probably because of the extra attention he’s receiving due to Nick Bosa’s injury, but Young is way too talented to be this silent. If Ohio State’s defense is going to improve for the stretch run, it has to start with him tomorrow.

Come on son, start taking over these games! Today's opponent is far from dynamic. If Chase doesnt have a dominant game today, he wont the rest of the year and next year will open with question marks. Get it DONE!

Chase was putting a lot of pressure on the Sparty QB's and helped in Wade getting a interception. As a matter of fact he was the only one getting constant pressure. I thought he did a good job.

Going to have to disagree with you there.

He got pressure a couple of times but more often than not he was blocked 1:1 by either Sparty OT

Cooper graded champion while Young did not.

Long way away from the “future overall #1 pick” hype we were hearing when Bosa was still playing.
