DE Chad Hoobler (official thread)

Dispatch

Chad Hoobler’s recent decision to transfer from Ohio State to Division II Ashland apparently stemmed from something as simple as a desire to play linebacker.
Ashland coach Lee Owens told the Canton Repository that "he was backing up A.J. Hawk last year and thought he would get a shot at linebacker this year. They were talking about redshirting him and playing on the defensive line and (him) getting bigger. … He wants to play linebacker."
Hoobler is expected to start for Ashland on Saturday in its opener against Saginaw Valley State, picked fourth in the Division II AFCA coaches’ poll. The Eagles’ second game is at Grand Valley State, the preseason No. 1. Hoobler’s stepbrother was a freshman at Ashland last year and will play safety for the Eagles this year. His sister is a cheerleader there.

HOOBLER HITTING

Carrollton High School graduate Chad Hoobler, who transferred from Ohio State to Division II Ashland last month, has practiced for about two weeks with Ashland. Not only did Hoobler start the Eagles opener Saturday, he hurt two of his teammates in practice.

Ashland coaches have had to dial back Hoobler’s intensity level in practice.

OK, they must be able to split them up then. When I went there, all of the talk was that each scholarship athlete typically received only half rides. The only exception that I was aware of, was for a nationally ranked shot/discuss guy that lived in my dorm. I was told that someone else had their scholly pulled so that they could combine them and he could get a full ride. So that must be how they did that.

They were a pretty good team when I attended, and constantly had a top 5 ranked defense. I heard that one of the linebackers. The kicker was really good, and actually went pro and played a few years for Dallas.

I played on the 1997 team that went to the playoffs and lost to Slippery Rock in the first round. I don't know what you heard about one of the linebackers because you didn't finish your thought. But you were probably talking about Dirk Lincicome. He went on to play in the arena league in Birgmingham for a few years. The kicker was Tim Sedar who played for the Cowboys and later the Jaguars. There was also a defensive tackle who went on to play in the arena league as well. Our QB that year was a transfer from BG who started a few games there.

As far as things like facilities, equipment, ect. I'm sure Hoobler is in for a rude awakening. The level of football played there might be a bit better than a place like Muskingum or John Carroll but things like facilities and equipment aren't any better. He might be recieving a full scholarship since they can divide up the scholarship money any way they want. Nobody really talked about how much scholarship money they recieved but I know some guys did get full rides and other guys didn't get anything. I'm sure he would be in the former group

Sorry about that. I was thinking of Tim Houseman, and heard that he had a tryout w/ the Cowboys. I was under the impression that he did pretty well, but that there were injury concerns surrounding him (knees, I think?).

Thanks for clearing up the scholarship part.

Hoobler played in all 10 games this season for a 4-6 Ashland team, starting once. He recorded 37 total tackles, 5 of those being for a loss. No sacks, interceptions, or fumbles forced/recovered.

Chad's career in football is over. He has had knee problems and is going to have two more surgeries. The last surgery he will have transplants in his knees. It is sad that this happened to a great player.

Wow! Knee replacement for someone so young is beyond drastic!

why did you transfer?

Hello,

Sorry if this is a sore subject 4 u but I follow the bucks recruiting very close. I was geeked when you commited but I don't understand why you transfered. did you get a raw deal or did you loose interest? Just curious. I just thought you showed nothing but upside 2 your potential. Any way, I wish you nothing but success and in my mind you will always be a buckeye! Good Luck,

Just a Fan who still gives a shit,
samuel
