DE Chad Hoobler (official thread)

Hopefully this is also a good sign regarding the coaches' confidence in MDA. But I do like the thought of him being able to do some things similar to Bobby C. even if it isn't meant as an indication of D'Andrea's health.

Why exactly do we need 7 standout DE's when Linebacker is our only true question mark? When I say question mark, I mean less certain than pretty much everything else, not weak.

Some of the DE's might be moving inside to a position that is lacking depth and others may be moving to TE which is also lacking depth... just a thought, who knows really.

I don't understand why the coaches get questioned so much, pretty sure they know what they're doing.

Part of it is rotation, and another part I'm sure is that Hoobler will be used like Carp was...may line up as a linebacker, may line up as a DE and you don't know if he is going to rush or go back into coverage

They're probably also looking for those guys who are a hybrid (sp?) of the 2 positions...mask our Def. 'Is that guy on the End coming in on the QB, is he dropping into coverage on our TE or out in the flat following the RB?'

...The things Carpenter could do, several NFL OLB / DE, like Vrabel.

I think they call the hybrid position where the DE either rushes or drops back into coverage the Leo. They recruited Walter Dublin specifically to play the Leo if I remember correctly. The coaches must really like the versatility the Leo bring to the defense (call it the Will Smith affect) since they moved Hoobler down to the spot and I also remember reading about Curtis Terry being used in a similar fasion this year.

Whenever Hoobler has been out there he has shown a propensity to bust things up in the back field. (And get penalty flags thrown). Hopefully this means they are looking at Chad as a "positive" disruptive influence as a rush end - he does seem to play with a mean streak, properly channeled that is a good thing.

I don't think Lawrence Wilson was on your list. :wink2:
