Per Spencer Holbrook at LR:

Lettermen Row sources have indicated that CJ Hicks and the Buckeyes are making an effort to preserve his redshirt so Hicks can play next season at Ohio State. If there are injuries that happen or Hicks is needed during the regular season, the redshirt plan can go out the window.

But there is a plan in place to allow Hicks to return to the Buckeyes next season, which is why he didn't have full pads on and didn't appear in the game against Minnesota on Saturday night
