DE C.J. Hicks (National Champion)

I hope for the best for him and the team. My only thought is that if you're going to be a one trick pony, especially as a linebacker, you better be pretty fucking good at that one trick and even if so, I still don't see it working on balance.

Ohio State coach confirms major suspicion on former five-star recruit making a position switch going forward

Ryan Day and multiple of his Ohio State assistants met with the media on Friday. It was an introductory press conference for multiple coaches who were brought on or promoted.

There was a ton of insight handed out in Day’s first press conference in well over a month.

The most interesting tidbit may have been that a former five-star recruit is officially making a position switch for the Buckeyes. It was trending this way and we saw signs of it last year, but C.J. Hicks will no longer be with the linebackers.

Hicks is now set to be with the pass rushers and goes from being coached by James Laurinaitis to joining Larry Johnson. Last November, it was hinted by former defensive coordinator Jim Knowles that Hicks would be joining the EDGE group.

"C.J. has that talent and that skill," Knowles said. "I think his future is gonna involve a lot more of that."

Following a game against Purdue last season where Hicks had four tackles, he was visibly upset after the game. “They need to put me on the f**king edge,” Hicks told The Podcast’s Austin Ward after the game.

Hicks is entering his senior season with the Buckeyes and has yet to find a starting role with the team. Hicks was the No. 10 overall player in the class of 2022 and the No. 1 linebacker. There were high expectations coming in for Hicks, whose best season was last year with 22 tackles and a pair of sacks.

I know he is 6'4" but how much does he weigh now? He came in at 210 lbs.

At least 233 lbs; however, I'm guessing that he is probably in the weight room putting on more weight/muscle as I'm typing this.....

C.J. Hicks, #11

  • Position: Linebacker Defensive end
  • Height: 6-3
  • Weight: 233
  • Hometown: Dayton, Ohio
  • Last School: Archbishop Alter
  • Year: Junior
Just sayin': 2025 will be his 4th year in the program. He played in 12 games in 2022, 13 games in 2023, and 15 games in 2024. The way things have turned out it is really a shame that he didn't redshirt his Freshman year.

Thanks! It would be great if he could get into the rotation. Gotta know that he is hungry to make an impact.
Hopefully he's hungry enough to get up to 245 haha. I'll be honest that it's not the trajectory I envisioned, but hybrid edge guys can really be worth their weight in gold. Abdul Carter is a great example but there are many others.

And it's not really a new concept, Nathan Williams and Thad Gibson did it very well here. The big question is adapting to a new role in a potentially new defense. CJ is insanely talented, we just need to get him to where he needs to be. He's a smart kid, so it will happen in whatever role he plays...confident in saying that.

Should be the Jack that Knowles wanted all along. Going to be 90% speed in his edge skills. We'll need that with the guys starting being a lot more power and hand skills. Hopefully he's the right combination to put us over the top
