Bobby Carpenter was talking a while ago about what makes Patricia’s system better/easier despite being complicated. Apparently he separates things for each level of the defense - the dline has 10 calls they need to know, the LBs have 10, and the DBs have 10.
He then mixes and matches to create hundreds of variations but each player only needs to know those ten things - it’s probably a little more complicated than that but in general that’s the idea.
He contrasted that with Knowles, where there are 75 calls and every player needs to know all 75 (just completely making up the number, but again, that’s the general idea).
If that is the case, it lines up with Knowles taking three years for his system to really take hold, while Patricia has had such immediate success with the players seeming to play faster and looser while still being disciplined.
It’s also great to have players like Downs and Styles in there who can really thrive making on the fly adjustments within those parameters.
