DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

College football pundits might owe Ohio State DC Matt Patricia an apology

It's early, but several college football pundits might owe the new defensive coordinator an apology.

When Ryan Day made the decision to hire Matt Patricia as the defensive coordinator of the Ohio State football program, a lot of people had questions. Patricia hadn't had a job in football for over a year, and he hadn't been a defensive coordinator since 2017.

Patricia had never coordinated a defense in college, which was perhaps the biggest question on the field. Off the field, Patricia had several questions stemming from an unsavory allegation. Yet, Day said he had done his due diligence and felt comfortable with bringing him in.

So far, so good. The Ohio State Buckeyes took down the top-ranked team in the country 14-7. The Buckeyes suffocated the Texas offense and didn't let them come up for air. Arch Manning looked overwhelmed, and a lot of that has to do with what Patricia was able to scheme up.

Matt Patricia looks like the right hire early for the Ohio State football team

While it's just one game, Patricia looks like an absolute mastermind for Ohio State. With how he used Arvell Reese and Caleb Downs, he looks like a defensive coordinator who is going to put opposing offenses in a blender all season long. Teams might not be able to figure it out.

f this kind of performance continues, several pundits should apologize for calling this a bad hire, including me. I was vehemently against this hire, although I did say I was willing to be wrong. After just one game against the number-one team in the country, I could not be more wrong.

We'll learn more about what Patricia has up his sleeve later in the season. Teams didn't have tape on him, so it was hard to prepare for this game. By the time Penn State comes to Columbus on the 1st of November, they will have an opportunity to see what Patricia's defense looks like.

How Patricia reacts to teams having more film on him will be the deciding factor on how good a coordinator he will be all season long. That Penn State game will be a tough game for him to call, but there are some other tough games before that game, too.

Matt Patricia couldn’t help but make an honest admission about college football after Ohio State beat Texas

Patricia was impressed by Buckeye Nation in a big way.

The official attendance at Ohio Stadium for the Week 1 showdown between the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes and No. 1 Texas Longhorns was 107,524.

Ohio State protected its home field in Columbus with a 14-7 win against Texas and Arch Manning. New defensive coordinator Matt Patricia’s unit delivered in a big way for the Buckeyes, serving as the catalyst for the victory.

After the game, Patricia admitted the biggest difference-maker: the fans.

“It’s loud, man. This place is loud. I love it. I absolutely love it,” Patrica said. “The fans, you don’t get that kind of noise in an NFL game. So I’m super appreciative of that. If we can play at home every game, if we can figure that out, that’d be great. I would be really excited about that.”

I’m sure Manuel knows what this is like. Guy couldn’t read frozen donner
Microwave instructions; so he knows how easy it was for coordinators to confuse the fuck out of him.
Yeah but he was good enough to cook coordinators in the SEC high off coke, drunk from whatever he found and having 3hrs of sleep. He certainly would know the level of difficulty because he couldn’t do the same in the NFL LOL

More film breakdown

Really wish I had that level of access to the all-22. Cover 2 isn't easy. You need two safeties who can MOVE.

What's perfect about this rep is how the #2 and the #3 are passed off. Boundary safety has no vertical work from the #1, so in cover 2 his eyes work back to the strength. Which means he picks up the strongside #3 on the over.

2nd level defenders, the strong hook in this case, is supposed to travel with the #3 and "wall" him off. When he turns the #3 to the boundary safety on the over, he continues traveling and "walls" the #2. Helps to limit or deny throws in the MOFO and protects the field safety as well who gets to read between the 1 and 2 now.

Just a great rep on film. That textbook teachtape stuff.

Two concerns:
Our D gave up 166 yds rushing
TX got inside our 10 yd line on two different drives.

Of course our D limited them to 7 pts (bottom line) but still some room for improvement. Not sure if we give up 166 yds against PSU, Washington or TCUN that we win those games. Unless, of course, we only give up 7 pts.
In the 1st game of the season, I see 166 rushing yards still as a win since that was their only offense. Their passing game was limited to 2 big passes. I'd have no problem in giving up 166 rushing to Ped St, as I know Allar is going to have a tough time against this back 7. Ped St had 120yds last year. But if this defense can keep those offenses 1 dimensional, and eliminate their passing, OSU has a very good shot at winning.

Patricia reminds me of a story... my oldest was playing soccer.. the team was terrible and we finished with 1 win.. One of the kids dad played college soccer and was furious every game.. The next year he took over the team.. virtually the same team.. he pushed these kids and put in schemes that I almost laughed at thinking "no way in hell do 14 yr olds understand this".. I learned a huge life lesson I used for many years coaching... Don't underestimate what kids can grasp and do.. We went undefeated and won the state championship.. Patricia put in an NFL tier scheme and the kids performed to the T... Probably helps having a Caleb Downs tho..

166 isn't really that much, especially to a good team. Also, 4 new starters on the DL so I don't think we should expect the 2002 DL vs the run
