DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

I loved the hire from the start after watching his interviews. I think after interacting with him, assistant coaches and players found out how knowledgeable Matt is and he is surprising not as mean as people make him up to be.

Let’s hope it translates to the field and I have no doubt it would.
I hated it as a Lions fan. But listening to him talk in interviews he's way more personable and comfortable in his own skin then then when he seemed like he was trying to be Belichek mini. Unlike Josh McDaniel's it feels like he really learned things on what he did wrong.

Agree with all the above

I was lukewarm on the hire but he has presented himself great - it's clear the guy is incredibly intelligent and an absolute student of the game. He lives, breathes, and sleeps football. It's fun to see him be relaxed, personable, and passionate and I would imagine that would translate well on the recruiting end. I doubt they have him over extending himself on that front just yet, but with the staff around him like Walton, JL, Hartline, he doesn't need to be instantly. The players seem to like him as well, so I'm feeling a lot better about this out of the box hire.

I didn’t know what to think. Then once I heard his interview talking about how he morphs his defenses to fit his personnel I thought we had a shot to have something with Coach Patricia.

Now we are getting reports he’s got CJ and Arvelle getting after the QB and I tend to think he’s doing what he said he would.

Going to be an athletic defense that’s for sure and I look forward to how he does things

Matt Patricia already drawing strong reactions as Ohio State's new defensive coordinator

When the Ohio State Buckeyes announced the hiring of Matt Patricia as the replacement defensive coordinator for Jim Knowles, there were immediate reactions that raised flags for fans. Patricia famously flamed out as the head coach of the Detroit Lions and interim defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, struggling to connect with players.

If Patricia couldn't create personal relationships in an NFL environment he had been in for two decades, many wondered whether he could adjust to an NIL-driven world with teenagers. Well, at least through the first few weeks and months of Patricia being in Columbus, Patricia is drawing rave reviews.

Safeties coach Matt Guerrieri was complimentary of Patricia throughout his press conference this past week. Guerrieri said he's enjoyed learning from Patricia in their brief time together on Ohio State's staff.

"Getting to know Matt Patricia has been phenomenal," he said.

Bryce West, a sophomore cornerback, added that Patricia's impact is much more encompassing than what happens on the field.

"The relationship with Coach P is amazing. He’s a great dude. He’s always around the team. He’s around us when we’re lifting," West said. "It’s not always about football (with him). He talks to us about life. He’s always there to help us."

Senior defensive back Lorenzo Styles Jr. said Patricia's presence has been a new experience. He said it's been "refreshing to have a coach who spends a lot of time with his players and really cares about them."

I’d have to agree regarding the surround sound on him. It seemingly is very positive.

It’s a bit ponderous how different that seems to be compared to some of the talk when he was announced. NGL, if there’s going to be some kind of delta here, I’ll take ‘better than what we were hearing at hire’ than the alternative.
It was always going to be this way. Early reactions are "bad hire", but the closer we get to football and WANTING it to be a home run, the more people just decide it's a home run.

I think there's room for agnostic optimism without deeming it a home run. Follow the evidence. The evidence so far, while not in-game, has been in the weight and locker rooms and practice field and has been positive and articulated positively in contrast to Knowles. Maybe this doesn't translate to the field, but that's what we have to go on, so far.

In general I think your statement is right. That said, there were some very specific things said about his demeanor that were less than complementary which, when contrasted with what we’re hearing from the team, are no where near what I would have expected. So, from that perspective alone, I’m pretty happy. But overall, I agree with your statement.

Well so far it seems like Patricia is a willing and quite capable recruiter, and reports are good so far on his coaching. We'll have to see how it plays out on the field but I will be happy to eat crow doubting this hire.
I could be fairly entertained if he should happen to restart the pick six university tradition against Penn State and maybe have his defense outscore their offense ...
