what Knowles put together was pretty clearly working until the players just botched the hell out of coverages.

There’s not a lot Knowles can do about years of shitty secondary development due to Kerry Coombs being focused on a job he should never have had to begin with.

Coombs is an easy scapegoat at this point. What are the players being taught for technique by the current coaches? They have had a full offseason, training camp and 11 games under this staff. Why was Martinez in the game?

Apparently you have to coach kids for more than a year to get them to tackle or cover anyone.

I haven't read anything here, but I'm going to throw in my 2 cents. They can teach better technique, but we need better players on the interior DL and DB. We don't have any studs in the secondary like we had up to 4-5 years ago when we had first round CB's in almost every draft. We have a couple good players on the DL, but if we want to stop the run without committing too many players to the box we need 4 studs on the field at all times. Teams like scUM and Ped State controlled the LOS and that doesn't get better with technique. They realized they weren't tough last year and preached that they were working to get better, but yesterday proved it wasn't enough.

Wasn't Matt Barnes the secondary coach the two years Coombs was the DC?

Hall and Tyliek were not what I thought they were. Hamilton and Vincent played the most snaps. Burke went backward this year. I’d give the defensive staff another year unless Knowles want changes. I trust him over Day on defensive staff.

The problem many had, is LJsr rotated way too much at times. This was a reason some have said that Williams wasn’t as effective. And Hall had been injured most of the season, limiting his effectiveness.
Burke just looked terrible all year. He should’ve been supplanted by Johnson or Brown, but it seems like neither were ready to play consistently at a high level. So Burke was the best option

I think the DL couldn’t get into a rhythm with being rotated so much. Every single podcast said as much throughout the season

Just sayin': It may not be shitty coaching. I'm thinking that just maybe some of our DB recruits are just not as good as the coaches (or us fans) thought that they were. Recruiting just isn't an exact science; outside of football factors and any "character issues" might come in play too. A prime example is 2018 CB 5 star recruit Tyreke Johnson that everyone was drooling over. He hit the transfer portal and transferred to Corn and he's not even doing anything at Corn where he is listed as a Junior. It's actually his 5th year in college, he was in Ohio State's 2018 recruiting class.

Hopefully, if he comes back for his 6th (extra COVID year), he can finally make significant on the field contributions.

Tyreke Johnson has yet to play in a game this season.

2021 (Sophomore)
Johnson played in two game in 2021, making his Husker debut in the win over Fordham. He also played on special teams in the season finale against No. 17 Iowa.

Johnson joined the Nebraska program after spending three seasons at Ohio State. The Florida native saw action in a total of 12 games in the Buckeye secondary over the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Unless Mike Hall is still injured, he should rarely ever leave the field. We got absolutely no rush up the middle without him which would have been quite beneficial while McCarthy was taking time to throw a bomb to a wide open receiver.

This may not be very popular but, as good as LJ has been - and he's a serious recruiting gem - I would like the replacement to be on staff before he retires. There has been a name floated about that I can't remember at the moment but maybe that young blood will give us some different perspective. Your DBs always look better when the DL is harassing the QB.

Randall Joyner and Kenny Anunike are the popular potential names as they were both grad assistants here under Johnson.

There have been an extraordinary number of busts in those two areas over the past few years. I very much question the talent level of both rooms.

I know the recruiting rankings don't say that but I see three 5 star DE's on the roster and only one that plays like it. I see DB's that are so bad I question if they could play for other P5 programs if you took away the names/recruiting rankings and they had to earn a roster spot.
