I believe in 2018, the defense was too complex and too much based on risk-reward, and Hafley simplified many things. And let's not forget that Hafley had an All American shutdown CB in Okudah and one of the best DEs in the country in Chase Young. Knowles doesn't have a great shutdown CB, and the DL play has been up and down due to so many substitutions from LJsr

The DBs were a MASH unit all year. No depth because everyone was injured and there were only 6 legit CBs. The portal will need to be hit

CB/S recruiting has been a known issue for a number of years - really since Coombs left the first time. We were hard pressed to find 1 CB to start across from Denzel Burke, then this year we’re hard pressed to find anyone to start across from and instead of Denzel Burke. Hell, Bryson Shaw was starting last year at safety. Last year, the defense wasn’t just bad at tackling, they didn’t even understand how to adjust to gap/run fits, which caused us to get outnumbered.

I think the defensive play calls that gave up the long passing TDs had guys in the right spot but were unnecessarily risky based on situations and personnel, not only on the roster but on the field.

On the Cover 0, Cam Brown hasn’t shown the ability to cover, close, or tackle all year. Knowles gave him help, with Jack Sawyer dropping into the zone, but Sawyer was slow to transition and slow to close. It was a tall ask, but it’s what the Jack/LEO needs to do - he didn’t finish the play and neither did Brown.

On the Cam Martinez TD, he got caught looking in the backfield and beat, got turned, and got torched. We had 3 guys in 1 zone with 1 Michigan player, so I’m guessing there should have Safety over the top.

I think the TD runs were a combination of good blocking and the OSU defense giving up.

My worries, in order, are:
1. Mental fortitude - 4-6, A-B and leadership
2. Defensive personnel issues - mainly the rotations and DBs.
4. Playcalling - defensive calls are too risky with known issues.

Eh I generally don't have any problems with the play calls. Choices were either die a slow death by letting SCUM slowly march down the field or get in the face of a QB that's terrible at beating man coverage and hadn't shown he could consistently throw the ball down the field all year. You can question why OSU would need a loaded box to slow them down with the talent they have, but I'm not sure there's a defense out there that wouldn't outside of Georgia.

Eh Eliano is fine. Our Safety play this year was much improved from years past till this weekend. And I don't know how much of them looking bad this weekend was them being closet to try to cover for a blown coverage.

CBs though have been bad but much like RBs everyone seemed hurt at some point or another

My concern is probably the same as a majority of folks with the CBs and Safeties, they have no clue how to cover. You could almost bet on a long pass or 3rd down a PI was coming. No ball skills at all!

Yep, it’s all about people right. If we want a coach that’s a CEO then they need to find the right guys. But, that doesn’t mean those guys are absolved of their fuckups.

Ironically, since Cooper has been brought up by many of us in comparison (me included), I recall Cooper taking a huge amount of shit for talking about his role as head coach was to coach the coaches.
