DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Coombs had his own issues but Day also meddled there. He saw Hafley's D in 2019 got enamored and wanted someone to run the same D even though Hafley admitted at BC he wouldn't run that same D with the players Coombs had his first year. Coombs came in cause he promised to despite no experience doing so. This time Ryan Day learned that wasn't good and hire the best D co-ordinator he could find and get out of his way

If Coombs had been slightly above average, we wouldn't be here. I'm more than good with an historically bad season if that's what it took to move us to Knowles. This should be an enormous net gain over at least the next few seasons.

Kind of like landing Urban Meyer. Tatgate doesn't happen, and we never get him

I think everyone as a whole is pleased with the defensive improvements. I am curious what our defense looks like against a competent QB and passing game. However when will we actually face that this year? MSU? Penn State? Hopefully we are able to hold up in that piece as the D seems capable of stopping the run this year.

ND was a 1st test, tbh. Because if this was last year, that game would've been much closer and probably a shoot out. Tulsa passed for 400+yds last year, I don't see that happening this season. Offense was our best defense last year. Knowles is putting clamps on teams with making the offense uncomfortable. Not many sacks, but a lot of disruption forcing mistakes

Sorry, can’t consider PSU competent when Vegas appointed Clifford’s backup better Heisman odds than Clifford himself. Maryland will be an underrated barometer imo.

Last year's defense looked/was incompetent against Minnesota and Akron (and, of course, Oregon) and that continued through the season. I don't see the level of functional competence from this year's defense dropping off in the B1G. They're not playing well because they're playing weak teams. They're playing well and it's not their fault they're playing weak teams.
