I am one of those who thinks it entirely possible that those guys are a top ten team this year, but elite is not a synonym for good. Labeling an offense elite after 1 game against Colorado state is ludicrous.

I'm going to have to see more than beating up on Colorado St and (this weekend) Hawaii, two of the worst teams in the country, to even consider calling them "elite."

In right as I posted. "Good" or "solid"...yeah, probably. But their schedule is loaded up with tomato cans, so I suspect their numbers will end up inflated coming into November. I feel much better with a Knowles coached defense to shut them down and shut them up.

Ohio State's leaky defense might have been solved by new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. The Buckeyes completely stuffed Notre Dame in the opener, holding the Fighting Irish to just five yards per play. Ohio State shut out Notre Dame in the second half of the Buckeyes' 21-10 victory, and Notre Dame was unable to generate many big plays. Knowles hopes this is just the start.
“Definitely displayed toughness,” Knowles said, via 247's Ohio State beat writer Patrick Murphy. “And that's physical and mental control of the line of scrimmage, control running, being able to perform under duress to fit the different runs. I think when anybody looks at a defense, you're gonna say 'toughness,' right? I mean, to me, that's all part of the confidence. Fans, Coach Day, everybody wants to see, 'Okay, whatever it takes to get our offense going, the defense is going to be tough, they're going to be there.' And I know he believes in that. And this is a great first showing for that. We can build on it.”

Would I have preferred to win 49-10? Sure, but it was much more important to this team and program to win 21-10 than 49-42.

He was on Day’s radio show today. Jim Lachey asked him about ND running two Tight ends on one side and having both pull, something Lachey had not seen them do before. He gave a bored sounding desultory (but polite) confirmation that he had his guys prepared for that.
So we’re allowed to have coaches that prepare the players for the unusual contingencies?

I’m not gonna articulate this that well, but the vibes coming off Knowles is reminiscent of Hafley.
i know Hafley is struggling a bit up at BC but his style and demeanor were top notch at OSU.
The word I’m hearing is confidence over swagger. Scheme is ruling the day over straight up ability.
Which is what we’ve always wanted.
I don’t wanna knock Coombs, but it seems he wanted kids to just play to their potential rather than incorporating difficult schemes. I think Day recognized the issue relatively early and has now fixed it.

Coombs had his own issues but Day also meddled there. He saw Hafley's D in 2019 got enamored and wanted someone to run the same D even though Hafley admitted at BC he wouldn't run that same D with the players Coombs had his first year. Coombs came in cause he promised to despite no experience doing so. This time Ryan Day learned that wasn't good and hire the best D co-ordinator he could find and get out of his way

Well GPA right there. I am cautiously optimistic here, I tend to think ND doesn't have a top 30-ranked offense this year but on the flip-side, our defense last year would have probably given up 30+ to that same offense, or at least more than the 21 we scored. I predicted something like 42-31 and I have to say I am much more happy with a 21-10 outcome than my prediction.
The offense is so talented and I think it will be rare to ever hold them to 21 points or less, but the defense I thought would take more time to put up a 10 point performance even against teams like Arkansas State and Toledo...not saying that might not happen in garbage time or on a big play where we break focus, but the defense is clearly improved by a measurable amount. Point is if we gave up 25+, I would be much more concerned about the defense than I am the offense only scoring 21.
