DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

I've never seen so many people read a column by someone that doesn't know enough about football to have a job working IN football.

Oakland. Darrius Heyward-Bey got picked seventh overall because of his speed. Period. To me, taking him this high is the kind of classic combine mistake teams made 15 years ago, pushing a player way up because he's an incredible specimen, not because he's a great football player. Heyward-Bey is a player with questionable hands and tremendous athleticism who should have been chosen 27, not 7.

And this guy is fast with questionable hands...Mr King seems to be a man looking for controversy in trying to sell his stories. DHB like MJ will have the eating crow in the fall.

Our Take: The Saints got it right with pick of Jenkins
Brady Aymond ? [email protected] ? May 4, 2009

It pains me to say it, but the New Orleans Saints nailed it with their first-round draft pick this year.

As much as I hate to admit it, Malcolm Jenkins is good - despite the fact that he's a Buckeye.

Jenkins may end up being a bust, as easily as he could end up being a perennial Pro Bowler.

Nothing in his career points to him being a bust, though. Jenkins was the equivalent of a shutdown corner in college, even though he rarely wore that label.

Jenkins, according to Ohio State, didn't allow a single touchdown in his coverage area through his four-year career with the Buckeyes.

In his senior season, Jenkins allowed only 30 catches for 230 yards in the 60 passes thrown his direction. That's an average of only 3.8 yards per pass attempt.

He was a consensus All-American his senior year and a first team All-Big Ten pick three consecutive seasons.

But here's the main reason why I think the Saints picking Jenkins with their first-round pick was the smart one - besides the fact that they need help in the secondary.

Maybe I am oversensitive but,
1. Is Aymond a professional journalist?
2. Is this the only way to stir passion and create controversy about a first round draft pick, (MJ's 40 times already publicly exposed)?
3. Is there that much passion and vitriole in the gulf coast to drive readership by belittling a college that is not a natural rival to any local schools?

Why not,
"Malcolm Jenkins is good - He was an integral part of 4 consecutive Big Ten Championship teams, anchored a solid defensive unit at the Ohio State University and so impressed college football that he received the highest NCAA honor for defensive backs in 2008."

Oh well, who wants to read/discuss that?

Worth repeating in case the readers from the south forget who MJ is and what he has accomplished. Who at LSU, Auburn or Florida has done that? Where was he drafted? Maybe they wish that someone from those colleges would have been selected. Homerism.

New Orleans Saints cornerback Malcolm Jenkins gets his first taste of pro ball at the team's minicamp Friday

Associated Press
Saints first-round draft pick Malcolm Jenkins did not allow a touchdown pass while playing at Ohio State.

Saints rookie cornerback Malcolm Jenkins confessed that he was rooting against the Saints last year when he tuned in to watch them on "Monday Night Football" on Oct. 6. Well, he wasn't so much rooting against them as he was pulling for Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield -- a fellow Ohio State alum whom Jenkins has always admired and emulated.

"Oh yeah, I didn't even think about that. That was against the Saints," said Jenkins, who remembered the rest of the details vividly.

"(Winfield) returned a blocked kick for a touchdown (59 yards) and sacked Brees for a fumble," Jenkins said. "That game really turned a light on me for my senior year, because I've always compared myself to him, and I realized my senior year I wasn't doing those kinds of things.

"Those types of performances change games. He pretty much dominated that game himself. When you can bring that type of dynamic to the game, it's something you can't account for."

If Jenkins can bring that type of game-changing ability to New Orleans' defense and special teams this year, Saints fans will happily forgive him for his allegiance on that Monday night in which the Vikings won 30-27.

Performances like that have been few and far between for the Saints in recent years. But if Jenkins lives up to his potential, that's exactly the kind of presence he can provide.

He'll take his first official steps toward that goal today when the Saints convene their three-day rookie minicamp -- a boot camp of sorts for rookies, first-year pros and tryout players.

"I'm just excited to get the plays under my belt, to learn what it is they want me to do, to start to study and get better," said Jenkins, who will start out by learning the left and right cornerback positions.

I'm not going to give myself too many props for that (statistic), because I know I'm not going to come into the league at 21 years old and be perfect," Jenkins said. "I strive to be; I'm a competitor. But that's what football is. You've got to persevere."

If he does that, Jenkins might be able to scratch together a career like Winfield, who has been a disruptive force for the Vikings and Bills over the past 10 years.

Or maybe he'll mirror the Packers' Charles Woodson, whom Jenkins is most often compared to by scouts. Woodson's physical style helped earn him a Heisman trophy in 1997 and five trips to the Pro Bowl in the past decade.

But Jenkins has never been too fond of that comparison.

"Not really," Jenkins said. "He's from Michigan."

He did a pretty damn good imitation with his blocked punt vs. Purdue(only TD of the game) and the sack/FF against MSU that gave us back the momentum.

New Orleans Saints - Home

Saints' Jenkins passes eye test at Rookie Mini Camp
Saints News
Written by Ken Trahan
Friday, 08 May 2009

On the first day of rookie minicamp at the New Orleans Saints training facility in Metairie, media were allowed to view about 30 minutes worth of the first workout. Aside from stretching, individual drills were performed, with the players in helmets and shorts only.

All eyes were fixed on first-round draft pick Malcolm Jenkins. The 6'0, 204 pound cornerback out of Ohio State looked solid. He moves effortlessly and seeing up close, he is a nice-sized corner, something the Saints have sorely lacked.

He is also well spoken--a mass communications major.

Jenkins looked good in high-pointing the football in drills. So did fourth-round pick Chip Vaughn of Wake Forest. The safety had many side-by-side drills and shared drills with Jenkins.

Vaughn is big--6'2, 221, clearly bigger than Jenkins. He could be the physical presence at safety that the Saints have sorely lacked in recent years. Payton praised Vaughn and former Wake Forest teammate Stanley Arnoux as being "sharp mentally. They were obviously well-coached and pick up things quickly," said Payton, in his video here.

This minicamp is important for Jenkins because he will miss the team minicamp as Ohio State operates on the "quarter" system and he will still be in school. Jenkins realizes that he will fall behind but plans to keep up to speed. "I know that I will be behind missing that time but plan to study everything while I am away," he said. As for his first day on the job, Jenkins said that he learned three basic coverages and was impressed with the organization and attention of detail of the Saints and the NFL.

Head Coach Sean Payton called Jenkins "a sharp kid." Payton added that the rookies were behind about five weeks in terms of weight lifting, running and scheme and that it would be a learning process. "We plan to spend as much time as possible making sure these guys know what to do," said Payton.
