DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

nice props from Peter King...

I think there's a good reason why the Saints fell in love with Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and drafted him 14th overall in April. He's obviously got a good football IQ. But his love of the game is something Sean Payton, GM Mickey Loomis and the football staff considered a major factor. And this past week, he showed his eagerness. He finished all his Ohio State coursework a week early (Ohio State has three terms, not two, and thus school in Columbus runs into June), pulling an all-nighter before his last final exam Friday, and flew to New Orleans late Friday so he could report for the last two days of Saints' minicamp this weekend.

All the things mentioned by the Saints are true testaments to the rare player the Saints got. Malcolm is not some pre-Madona player looking for a big money holdout...he is a hardworker with an underdog mentality, and he played that way here at OSU. He always played hard here, no matter whether it was the NC game's first play or a 4th quarter punt coverage against a low tier Big 10 team that we already had beat. When you're playing that hard when a game has already been won or lost, you have a player that loves the game and Malcolm does. He is going to make the Saints very happy...in fact, I may have a new second favorite team now.

1986? That's 'borderline' inaccurate by a couple of years. I thank my lucky stars that I knew that.

That takes me back to when I would have hit it.

Now? Not so much. :sick1:

And now.......back to Malcolm. I am not a big NFL fan, but I do watch from time to time. I have always kind of liked the Saints (for this I have no reason, it just is what it is), and now will probably watch both them and the Rams quite regularly. Both Malcolm and James are in my top ten favorite Buckeyes (which is a tough ten to crack) but anyone who comes back their senior year just to play one more year at The Ohio State University, even though they could make millions if they did not stay, is tops in my book.:osu:

Piscataway High School a prolific pipeline for Division 1 football programs
Posted by Matthew Stanmyre/The Star-Ledger
July 06, 2009

Marvin Booker had only been at his old high school field for about 15 minutes Thursday afternoon before he couldn't take it any more.

He had to get out there and compete.

Booker graduated from Piscataway High in 2008, then moved on to Rutgers and immediately contributed on special teams as a freshman. He stopped by his old team's summer workout because so many others before him did the same when Booker himself was a player at Piscataway.

That was the lifeblood of the program, after all.

"These kids see me come back, and then they see me on TV playing," Booker said. "They'll be like, 'I can do that.' It's the same thing when we saw Malcolm on TV. It was like, 'That's Piscataway right there.' "

Booker referred to Malcolm Jenkins, who in April became the first Piscataway player to be picked in the first round of the NFL Draft after starring at Ohio State. Booker and Jenkins are two of a slew of top-level players to pass through the Piscataway halls this decade, an outpouring of talent that has made the football program a frequent destination for college coaches in search of stars.

New Orleans Saints top draft pick Malcolm Jenkins participates in a drill during minicamp at the team's practice facility June 6. General Manger Mickey Loomis said he expects Jenkins' negotiations to come down to the wire.

The Saints are expecting a typical timetable when it comes to signing their draft picks this year.

That means fourth-round pick Chip Vaughn and sixth-round pick Thomas Morstead likely will be signed by early next week, well in time for the start of training camp practices next Friday. And first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins' deal should come right down to the wire.

Jenkins was drafted 14th overall out of Ohio State, which puts him in the middle of the first-round pack. Generally, players drafted outside of the top 10 or 12 get their deals done in a timely fashion, but that's not always the case. New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, drafted 14th in 2007, didn't sign his deal until Aug. 15.

Last year's No. 14 pick, Chicago Bears offensive tackle Chris Williams, agreed to his deal in the early morning hours before Chicago's first training camp practice.

The Saints are hoping to wrap things up with Jenkins more quickly than they did with last year's first-round pick, defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis. Ellis, who was drafted seventh overall, was one of the final three first-round picks to sign a deal last year, missing six days of camp and 12 practices.

Rookie cornerback Malcolm Jenkins eager to get deal done in time for camp

Rookie cornerback Malcolm Jenkins says he grasped a lot in offseason workouts but he doesn't want to fall behind by missing training camp time.
Although little progress has been made on the contract front, Saints first-round draft pick Malcolm Jenkins appears to be settling into his new surroundings.

Jenkins, the 14th overall pick and top-rated cornerback in the April draft, said his agent opened preliminary discussions with Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis on Friday. Jenkins hopes to report for the start of training camp next week.

Players are to report by 10 a.m. Thursday but can check into the team hotel, the Airport Hilton, beginning Wednesday. Two practices are scheduled for Friday at the team's training facility in Metairie -- 8:50 a.m. and 4:20 p.m. Both are open to the public.

"As of right now, there's been no progress," Jenkins said. "My agent (Ben Dogra) has spoken to Mickey several times before today, but this was the first day where they started making strides, I guess.

"I've expressed to Ben that I want to be there on time, but at the same time, I pay him to do his job, and I'm going to let him do it. I want to get to camp on time, but it's in the hands of my agent."

Attempts to reach Dogra were unsuccessful.

Jenkins ended the team's offseason program in June with the second unit and will be vying for a starting job in training camp.

"I want to be in camp from Day 1, but I think the way they were installing stuff, the things that we've already put in, I think I have a pretty good grasp on them," he said. "I know when we start installing (the playbook), we're going to pretty much go back to the basics.

"So the first couple of practices, I think I can do without. But if it goes past a couple of days, that's when I think I'll fall behind. So I'm trying to push my agent so I can definitely try to get in there on time."

Jenkins said he remains in good shape after working out this week with teammates Lance Moore and fellow rookie Chip Vaughn, a safety and the team's first of two fourth-round draft picks.

"My last day of working really hard was (Thursday), so I think I can start relaxing now," Jenkins said. "I'll do a little bit of light workout early next week and then just shut it down."

Besides working out in New Orleans and tweeting, Jenkins is trying to get his new apartment in order. Fans might have seen him recently shopping at "Wal-Mart, Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Pier 1 Imports; places like that," he said.

"My mom (Gwen Jenkins) flew in for the weekend, so she's been helping me put the finishing touches on my place," Jenkins said. "She did all the decorating and stuff, color schemes and stuff like that."

Agent for New Orleans Saints' rookie, Malcolm Jenkins, is a busy man

It's hard to get a good read on the contract status of Saints first-round draft pick, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, other than to say he has not signed yet. At least at the time of this posting.

But there are still four days till players are required to report for the start of training camp and anything can happen.

One good sign is Jenkins has arrived in the Big Easy and moved into an apartment, suggesting he is ready to go once his agent, Ben Dogra, and Saints GM Mickey Loomis come to an agreement. Each official is remaining tight-lipped these days.

Saints fans can keep tabs on Jenkins' whereabouts on his twitter page.

New Orleans Saints not optimistic that first-round draft pick Malcolm Jenkins will sign by tomorrow
by Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune
Wednesday July 29, 2009

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis said he is optimistic that fourth-round draft pick Chip Vaughn and fifth-round pick Thomas Morstead will be signed by tomorrow, when players are scheduled to report to training camp.

But Loomis admitted that he is not optimistic that a deal with first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins will be done by then.

Loomis declined to expand on any specifics of the team's negotiations with the cornerback, who was selected with the 14th overall pick out of Ohio State. But his assessment should hardly come as a surprise.

As of this morning, only four first-round draft picks around the NFL had agreed to contracts, though a few others might filter in as the day goes on. Reportedly, Buffalo offensive lineman Eric Wood has agreed to a deal today.
