When cornerback Malcolm Jenkins surprisingly elected to stay at Ohio State for his senior season, the Buckeye football team got much more than an experienced senior leader at cornerback. Jerry Rudzinski explains why in this version of the Captain's Corner.

A couple of nuggets from the chat...

Nate:Chillicothe: After experiencing preparations for Florida and LSU, what do you think needs to be addressed in preparing for another tough matchup with USC so we can contend for another national title this year?

Kristin:Norwich: What is your best memory of this last season?

John:conneaut: What are your goals for this season?

Mark:Columbus: Who is the best receiver you have had to cover from an opposing team, and in practice?

Jenkins' spot play at safety may be over

Wednesday, April 09, 2008 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Malcolm Jenkins desires to go down as the best cornerback in Ohio State history, so it makes sense that he's playing only cornerback.
A year ago, the Buckeyes' best cover man went to safety in OSU's often-used nickel defense, allowing backup Chimdi Chekwa to enter the game at corner as the fifth defensive back. And safety Anderson Russell moved to the star position, covering the slot receiver and stationed in the best spot among the DBs to help stop the run.
This spring, all that is out the door. Anyone who saw Jenkins bite on some big pass plays at safety late last season might understand why.
@StoryAd
"We're trying to get guys focused on one position," Jenkins said after practice Tuesday. "Last year I had to know safety and corner. Anderson had to know safety and the nickel position. . . . The last couple games, the coverages got harder for the safety to learn because there are so many different things in some coverages. And I had to learn on the fly."

I'm really glad to hear this. I would rather have Jenkins lock down half the field then have him back at safety reading the defense and trying to make a play (nothing against Chekwa).

Having Jenkins at corner I think also helps the safety because they know that he is a great cover guy and probably won't need help as much. They can focus on the other recievers more if they don't have to worry about MJ's guy.
