From what I've been told, that quote should read, the surgery did not relate to his heart condition.

Personnel updates
Freshman defensive back Chad Hagan had surgery during preseason camp and will sit out the season, Tressel said. He did not say what type of surgery, but said it was unrelated to the heart problems Hagan experienced in high school at Canonsburg, Pa.

Chad Hagan and Scott McVey seem to be recovering from their injuries, as both participated in drills. McVey did not use his right arm during the rope drills, but Hagan seemed to be full-go. Both players worked with the linebackers. C.J. Barnett also looked to be full-go during drills after tearing his MCL and PCL against Miami.
Hagan makes his move
Freshman Chad Hagan might have made the biggest move of anyone on defense this spring.
He was considered a reserve linebacker at the start, after redshirting last season while recovering from surgery to correct a heart condition as a senior in high school in Canonsburg, Pa.
But when the first-team defense took the field, he was in the lineup with the only returning starter at linebacker, Andrew Sweat, and Etienne Sabino.
"Chad actually went to my rival high school," said Sweat, who is from Washington, Pa. "I've known Chad since seventh grade, and I've been pleased with his progress.Obviously he's been hurt, and I didn't really know what he could do. He's never really played linebacker. I think he's learned, and he's played well - he's a physical defender. I'm very impressed."
