DB Eugene Clifford (official thread)

Yep, thanks for all the info H&G. You are one of the reasons that makes the planet the best.

If Eugene goes to Cincy, it would be a loss. But how badly would it hurt if we get Oliver, Wright and Petello plus pretty good players in Anderson Russell and Jamario O'Neil? Ohio State football will have more than enough legs to go on and compete for the Big Ten and National Championships. :osu:

A-men...and thank you...

again, Gene hasn't de-committed...I am only saying, in my opinion, that I believe he will follow KC to UC...other Cardinal fans are not so sure...But I can gurantee that we will all be sweating until signing day.

I don't know Eugene personally, and Im not close to the program or anything, but I can't really see Eugene and Ben passing up the opportunity to play at OSU for a National Championship and on natl. tv every week to play at Cinci. Cincinatti is in the Big East which is a respectable conference, but right now they are down. I don't know, I personally cant see it but I guess we should take H&g's word since he is closer to the program. Good luck to Gene wherever he goes.

More spaces for the Ohioans that truely want to be Buckeyes in 2008! I don't think this will kill OSU. Sure it would be disappointing, but I see many more highly touted recruits, big ten titles, and BCS game in our future with or without these two recruits.

I can totally understand wanting to play for your HS coach on the college level, but if he changes his commitment on that basis alone, he's making an ill-advised decision. He has a chance to start as a frosh for (potentially) the defending champs, while getting top-notch coaching and a tremendous education.

Either way, I have to imagine this is going to be devastating to the future of OSU recruiting in the cincinnati area...

I don't know if any of us are in a position to be saying what is a good a bad decision for this young man. Not only are we biased, but we just flat-out don't know the relationship that Eugene and Coach Coombs have with one and another. Playing time is an obvious selling point for them too, coupled with the facts that he can get a great education at UC and the fact that his DC will be coaching him, it could be a tough pull for the Bucks.

update:

just got a call from a source...Coombs announced at the football banquet today that he starts as UC's defensive coordinator tomorrow.

I will be shocked if Clifford doesn't follow suit.
h&g, did you mishear what coombs said, or was coombs incorrect in what he stated?

According to the Cincinnati board, he's going to be the Defensive Backs coach.

http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/cincybearcats/

Quote:
Kerry Coombs, who directed Colerain High in suburban Cincinnati to a Division I state championship and four other semifinal appearances, has been added to the University of Cincinnati coaching staff. Coombs will serve as defensive backs coach.
“We feel very fortunate to have Kerry Coombs joining the University of Cincinnati football program,” stated new UC head coach Brian Kelly. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our staff. Kerry has a strong presence in Southwest Ohio and throughout the state. We also have a shared philosophy regarding player development.”
Coombs compiled a 161-34 record in 16 seasons at Colerain. His 2004 team posted a 15-0 record and won the state’s big school title with a 50-10 win over Canton McKinley in the championship game, setting a record for margin of victory. Over the last seven seasons, Colerain has won seven league titles while compiling an 86-8 record.
Coombs’ 2006 team went 13-1 and reached the state semifinals. Colerain was ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press Ohio poll and No. 18 in the USA Today national rankings.
Coombs success at Colerain has emphasized defense, which he personally coached. In 2006, the Cardinals posted six shutouts and yielded just over a touchdown per game.
Coombs has mentored two of the last three Ohio Division I Defensive Player of the Year award winners, including current UC defensive tackle Terrill Byrd, who also won high school national defensive player of the year honors in 2004.
Coombs guided Colerain to 10 playoff appearances and seven undefeated regular season records. The Cardinals won the Greater Miami Conference title and advanced to the regional finals of the state playoffs in each of the past seven seasons.
Coombs was a member of the University of Dayton’s football team that was the NCAA Division III title in 1980. He completed his bachelor’s degree from Dayton in 1983 and later earned his master’s in education from Wright State.
The Bearcats begin getting ready for their Jan. 6, 2007 game vs. Western Michigan in the International Bowl in Toronto, Ont. Kelly and staff conduct their first practice for the International Bowl on Monday, Dec. 18.

Your're right, and like I said, I can understand wanting to play for you HS coach, and I totally expect him to do so. But from a football perspective, it wouldn't be the best decision.
